Hi folks,
Let me try to share with you some of the pictures from my latest project. Because it is my first real post on this forum (although I’m visiting side on daily bases for a very long time) I’m not sure how this will be working.

Well the project it self is representing the fragment of Franco-prussian war of 1870, actually 105th inf. regiment during battle of Sedan. It is practically fully inspired by a book written by Emile Zola – La Débâcle, which I’ve found as a great reading and could only recommend to everyone interesting about this part of history.
I’m working on this project for more then year now and still there is a few weeks of work still in front of me.
All figures are sculpted from a mixture of Magicsculp and Duro, heads are Hornet and Warriers, while guns and some of equipment from older set from ICM.
Any comments or criticisms are welcomed.
Cheers
David

hi David
Let me tell you my congratulations for this project.
It's a piece of our history and i'm so happy to see a dio about this forgotten
war.
I think you are inspired by a Edouard Detaille's paint : death of commandant Berbegier (70e de ligne) during the battle of Saint-Privat ;)

I like very much the work on the figures (the officer is great) and i'm in hurry to see the paint.
The base with the salades is a good idea.

i've a question : where do you find the chassepots ?

and again bravo

Seb.

figure's pictures

Thanks for comments chaps, well as regarding the quality of pictures, than I’m slightly struggling to get the picture bellow 200 kb, which is the limit for posting.
I do have some separate pictures of each figure already with surfacer coating on them. So I hope they will be better with details.
Also pictures presented above were done in the stage of adjusting figures to terrain and also to decide where each figure will be exactly placed.
The actual project as it is now looks slightly different.
Sebastien, you right that painting from Edouard Detaile The death of commandant Berbegier together with superb illustrations from E. Zola’s book it self, were a great inspiration of me.
Most of the figure’s position (especially the officer’s), together with general havoc with all the personal items, knapsacks and ammunition scattered all around as it is shown on Detaile’s painting will be the way how I’m trying to make my dio as well. The cabbage field (I know it more looks like a salad, but it should be cabbage ) on the other hand is exactly coming out from book.
The chassepot rifles are coming from ICM (plastic sets in 1/35) just slightly reworked, there are however some Dreyse rifles converted to chassepots as well.
Cheers
David

Sébastien,
I know this painting, I also have quite a lot things from A. Neuville and E.Detaile, but I'm generally strugling to find a higher quality pictures... If you by any chance have possibility to send me some (to my e-mail [email protected]) I'll be very glad...
I'm able to send some paintings from R. Knotel by the way...

David, Welcome to Planet figure. Very nice composition. What a project! I think fellow planeteer Jason Whitman will flip over this. He did a similar project a while back. That will look even better with paint on it.~Gary

Looks really good.
Just one remark as far as possible with pictures of course. I would drop the gun out of the hands of the dead soldiers. I think it would look more convincing.

Thanks for more comments chaps...
Gary, I'm certainly big fan of Jason's works and his "on the firing line" project is one of my favorite...
To vergilius - as regarding the dead soldier, it took me while to decide his pose, but than previously mentioned paintings from E. Detaille, convinced me that this could be natural pose... Imagine that he's got a direct hit into his head, causing his immediate death, I think this poor fellow died with his hands still firmly holding his gun... by the way I'll be curios about comments when I'll post painted version of this accident…

David, that is a very fine diorama you are working on.

I like the layout, poses and the interaction of the figures. Nice little touches, like the vegetable field.

Some critic: Some areas on the figures could be improved. Some details are a bit soft and sometimes surface or folds are a little rough.

But in itself this is fine work.

(note to myself: finish my prussian infantryman)

Manfred

David, good work on a very interesting subject matter, my compliments.
Welcome to the Planet and thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Manfred

There are areas where it looks like some of the work was not cleaned up after sculpting. While some of this can be hidden with paint it's best to get the figure as smooth as possible unless you want some texture. One thing that must be remembered is when a photo shows a figure 2 to 3 times it's normal size. When you scale the figure down you scale down the areas in need of clean up.~Gary

Fantastic diorama you've got going there David! and as Manfred said the layout and interaction of the figures is excellent.
Really look forward to seeing it finished.

Leigh
