Hello people,

... Just wondering : can it be that in 1870, during the first weeks/months of the Franco - German conflict, some regiments of French Dragoons of the Line were still wearing their old uniforms - that is, dark green coat with lapels instead of the new mod. 1868 dark blue tunic ?

In that case, can one paint the Metal Modeles French Dragoon, Crimea, 1854, (ref SE5) as a dragoon of 1870 ?

I know one painting by De Neuville of the war of 1870 which shows Dragoons in dark green lapel coats minus epaulettes ("the Charge"), and one by Dupray which shows them charging at Rezonville, wearing short dark green undress jackets, old model 1845 brass helmets, and the same equipment as the metal modeles figure, and even old percussion rifles instead of chassepot carbines !

... so I wonder ...

And I have found a photo dated 1870 of the 3rd dragoons of the line, who fought at Mars la Tour (and attacked their own lancers in error, confusing them with Prussian uhlans) which also strangely shows them wearing lapel coats and not tunics!

So, could anyone please help me out of the dark here - can I paint the metal modeles figure as an 1870 dragoon or not ?

Thanks - you're all beautiful people ;)

Johan
