The French Foreign Legion has always fascinated me for quite a while since watching Gary Cooper in Beau Geste (1939). Not that I watched it in 1939 but in the 60s.
The early period of the Legion is now being produced in model form and Troop54s latest two releases are foreign legion from the early years.
Starting on the base first seems a good idea as the figure is nearly against the wall.
Looking at old photos and line drawing from Algeria gave a flavour of the old city of Constantine.
The base has been painted in Acrylics and Oil paint has been used for the Green algae growth on the lower wall, still loads to do to this.

Great stuff Bob, love the way you've painted that wall. I've already got this figure in the GA box, & Mike Chappell's illustration from the Windrow book.
One question - what colour are you going to paint his coat? In the MC painting it looks almost black, but in other illustrations I've looked at on the net it looks like a dark Prussian Blue.

Great start Bob.

I picked this one up off Stu at the WR Xmas bash in Leeds at the weekend, it's a cracking little figure and great value for money with that wall section included.

It's a cracking figure and hope to see more like this and a good price too.
I have the Martin Windrow book on the 'uniforms of the French Foreign Legion' the coat is described as an almost black blue so that's the colour I will paint this one

Hi Mr Bob

Nice work on the base there ....

I saw this figure and it's a lovely looking sculpt glad it's been released ...perhaps we might see the picture of a officer climbing out a trench as in the book

Following with interest

This is a great new figure from Troop54. I enjoyed painting their Crimean War Foreign Legion figure and hope to get around to painting this one too. Look forward to seeing your progress. The wall looks great.

Thank you Nap, I believe the officer on a ladder turning with a cane in hand has been done a short while ago but for the life of me can't think who did it.

Many thanks Edward, I have also done the one you mention and these later one's with the groundwork a superb and hope they may continue.

Fantastic ground work Bob! Great painting effects. (y) I've always meant to complete Andrea's Gary Cooper as Beau Geste, but never quite got around to it. I look forward to seeing how the Troop54's turn out.

Cheers,
Ken

Much appreciated Ken. thanks for looking in

Great groundwork Bob. I just received this one last week, so I will be following your.progress. Don't have the Blandford book so I don't know what the entire plate looks like, but I think a companion piece would make this guy look even better

Really very nice start. I await more updates.....:):):)

Thank you, hopefully get some more painting tomorrow.

The Martin Windrow book is quite easy to find on either Amazon's secondhand area, or Abebooks (where I got my copy from). It's also not unreasonably priced.

That's a terrific wall with some highly realistic detail........didn't know the figures until just now after
Googling them (although Beau Geste has always been a favourite with that arch-sod Dagineau as a
particularly nasty villain). Promises to be an exciting piece..........looking forward to more.

Many thanks for dropping by to comment. These figures are very good and this is the second figure with a piece of groundwork supplied. It's a great idea and works well.
Thanks again Mike.
