Just had the car in for its MOT. Knew it didn't need much, only a new tyre so I just took it along to my local Halfords for a quick turn around.
Went for a coffee, Halfords called to say it was ready and apart from tyre only needed to replace wipers so no surprise. ............. but as soon as I got there the anticipated routine kicked in.....
"don't want to alarm you but we're concerned that your timing chain is a problem......now it's up to you but if it was me I'd be fitting a full new kit before the engine gets wrecked. If you want we can supply and fit today £570!!!!!!!!"
Told him I'd have a think about it ........ took it round the corner to a well respected small independent ............. "no problem with the chain itself, but a small oil leak ....... fixed, oil and filter replaced today and advised to make sure to keep a check on oil regularly as small leaks are a factor of many Vauxhalls £67!!!!!!!. So basically £500 saved(y)
Was talking to another guy waiting for his car he was saying that the new manager at the Halfords is ex Kwik Fit and has brought all the sharp practices with him. The previous Halfords manager was from an independent and left because of the pressure to hit income targets.

Thought this might be appropriate as the enquiry, investigation and inquests begin into the Grenfell Tower tragedy gathers momentum............. is that the sound of shredders grinding and delete buttons being pressed I hear???????

Well the kiwi-fit routine is legendary , surprised an old sea dog like you even went there.
My van needs a new set of front brake pads so going to take it to Kwik- fit Milngavie for a bit of fun as they have a fearsome reputation for scamming , will also try Halfords and Arnold Clark .
Ten to a penny it will require new discs , callipers ,pipes and maybe a timing chain  oh and by the way sir your troosers are at your ankles

Last visit was fun to watch.
Tyre puncture repair routine . First all four tyres are inspected , off with the offending one , visual check , I am summoned out to look at the damage along with the manager , he says its on the borderline and fixable , tyre is repaired and then I am summoned out again and told there are ripples in the inner wall and I need a new tyre and they can screw me for a 160 quid but they will have to order the tyre for the next day so i can take the car home .
Just a little suspicious as the car has only done three thousand miles ; I phone Merc up take the car in for a free check , tyre has minor ripples but not uncommon no need to replace.
Return to the KF to pay for the puncture repair and tell them that Merc dealer says the tyre is fine . manager waives the tyre repair cost .

Had the same thing with National Tyre when I went for just a new tyre . They claimed that the discs were so badly worn and grooved that they could go at any minute, which surprised me as the van had only gone through a service the week before . So I had the work done but asked for the old brake pads and discs back before I left which I took to the garage that done the service , they assured me there was at least 20k miles left on the discs but would send back to the manufacturer to confirm . Sure enough report comes back at least 20k still on discs . SO back to NT with the report under my belt and told them what a lot of thieving B8stards they were and I wanted ALL my money back including the money for the tyre . Got It .
But as this is Friday night song section lets get back to the music . Has anyone else tried listing to Glastonbury on the beeb , every year the sound quality is so Crap . I have been to quite a few open air festivals over the years from rock to classical and the sound has never been as disappointing as Glastonbury .
Here's my offering , somewhere there's cars mentioned but mainly because I think it's great.
