I’m sure we all have a figure stash (see attached), and maybe try to keep it under control?
But which subject/subjects do you always come back for?
Is there a topic that gets under your armour every time?
For me it’s the French army of WW1; mercifully scarce.

Answers on a postcard…
(There’s no judgement here)

Hi David

That's your stash ...WOW ...... mines currently in 4 big plastic storage containers in garage .......whoops !

For me it's anything with medals nowadays ...or anything I like the look of but for some reason nothing medieval or Ancient ......but always on busts .....nothing with legs !

To each, their own...
It's interesting what people find most appealing.
I would hate to be a manufacturer and try to gauge what is likely to sell well.

You don't have a problem yet. This is part of mine, the rest is in five large totes in a closet. I'll probably never get to them all but I love it. I like all periods of history but WW2 , American West and Modern Special Forces are my favorite areas.

The thing with figures (more so than with more than plastic aircraft & armour kits) is that companies seem to pop up and then vanish again without trace, and so figures are more likely to go OOP. Then there's the "Limited Editions" thing, which seems to be gaining traction now among producers.

So for years my mantra has been to grab it while you can if you like it, because you never know. Then at some point in the future you can always offload it if you decide that you're unlikely ever to paint it. And in the meantime there's also a certain enjoyment to be had just from owning nice pieces. This has resulted in me now owning (at my rate of painting & completing) several lifetimes' worth of unstarted pieces (around 400 at the last count)

From time to time I have a bit of a clearout of stuff that I've deemed surplus to requirements, but the proceeds are inevitably spent on acquiring new releases. I just can't help myself! I have become a bit more selective, and less prone to impulse-buying, but I'm not too bothered if the figure stash continues creep along on an upward trajectory because it takes up relatively little space and as said, it's nice just to own.

Plastic kits on the other hand take up far more space both built and unbuilt, and over the past couple of years I've managed to shrink my stash by about 100 from around 230 to 130-ish. In the next step I'm aiming to get it below 100 and then take it from there. That will free up more loft & garage shelf space, and with plastic kits I have a policy of not buying another until I've built or sold two. And I (mostly!) manage to stick to that. My wife also has instructions about what to do with all my stash should I kark it before she does. She was surprised when I told her its retail value, and I'd want her to get at least part of that back!

I'll paint anything that takes my fancy and in any scale, and I have a bit of everything from ancients to modern, plus a sprinkling of sci-fi and fantasy. Not so bothered about Napoleonics though, and also not much 19th century European stuff (Crimea, Franco-Prussian etc.)

I rationalised my stash when I retired and got rid of a load of stuff I knew I was never going to build. The stash all fits on a couple of shelves in a storage cupboard now. Most of it is 1/32 WWI aircraft, figures don't take up much space.... I felt much better getting the stash down to a size which should be doable in the years I have left.

One of the issues I found is that I had acquired a lot of stuff over the years and the quality if the old stuff is pretty poor compared to the latest figures. For example, I have had this on the shelf for many years:

When I get it out and look at it the sculpting and overall quality is poor compared to anything available nowadays. But I decided to keep it and will get round to doing it one day (and yes, I am going to make it more historically accurate..... ;):))

I used to be pure military and then I saw how many other "things," made me happy. Just seeing the beauty, creativity, and or action, not to mention character of a figure opened up my world. So just like Steve said " I paint what takes my fancy. "

With that said I still love 120mm WW II paratroopers (mouth watering)!
