This is a classic sculpt from Carl Reid that I've had in my grey army for rather a long time
and its about time I painted it.
Unfortunately for me my copy isn't a great casting, lots of air bubbles and some of the fine detail
needed repair with magic sculpt. I've done my best to rectify the issues as best possible, and
decided to make a start on the painting.

There's a lot of detail on this piece, which is going to throw a few challenges my way.
As always I've started with the flesh tones, taking a slightly different approach than
with the Officer Anglo - Zulu war that I've just completed.
I've tried to blend in the varying shades with a bit more care to avoid leaving a sheen.

A great start Malc the skin tones are very well done, I think you are definitely capturing the Bust very well in deed. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the gold brading . Are you going for the non metallic look?

Keep up the good work I’m watching with interest.

Skintones are looking good, technique wise you have pretty much mastered these I think. You could try playing with a more Mediterranean olive tone though.

I think you are being more than generous with that description, the full size image shows up just what you are dealing with. Not sure that one should have passed quality control.

You're right Rob, its poor to say the least. If I'd received it more recently and with the quality we expect and receive today, I would've returned it and asked for a refund.

Hi Malc

You weren't wrong about something sooner than I think !

Always like the 1821 ....a good start on a fabulous character .....nice start on the headwear

Looking forward to seeing more especially the NMM ...Joe Hudsons mix is something I'm going to attempt ( in my references thread )

This might help as well https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/ys-miniatures-georgios-drakos-1821-oils.62427/

Happy benchtime ....wonder what else you have lurking ?

Looking good, he looks a bit like my bank manager when I was posted to Cyprus. I agree with Rob though a more olive tone would be appropriate, that said there is a lot of variety of skin tone so it's still right as it is. Looking forward to the costume getting done.

Cheers Simon

I'll have a go at adjusting the skin tones and will take a closer look at Joe Hudson's NMM.

I've was continuing work on this piece this morning, and decided that the casting is in a worse state than I first thought and to
continue working on it is not in my best interests and have chosen to abandon it and put it in the bin.:arghh:
Sadly this is where it belongs.
I was looking at another bust from the same manufacturer and although the casting is better, the fit of the components is very poor.
And some of them don't fit as they should.
Enough grumbling, and I've now started something a bit more recent, so look out for a new thread shortly.

Shame but I am not surprised, he was a bit of a lost cause.
Is he still in production somewhere?

Looking forward to seeing what you pick up next.

I have Ibraim Passa from YS masterpieces I will check it when I went back home!! I know they are very old versions! Yes is still in production...but the producer is one of the best in casting So I belive this quallity is bad because is very old versions (from 90's)

Shame Malc as with a good copy of the bust he'd have been brilliant but you can't keep flogging a dead horse.

Cheers Simon

Did a bit of digging based on @snick's comment and found a current YS listing:

https://www.ysmasterpieces.com/brand/20/category/276

Website is very, very temperamental in what opens/loads but the 1821 range is there, including (on another page) some 90mm full figures. The busts are wonderful characters, hopefully production quality is up to standard now as they could be great to paint. They are a bit pricey for a "try it and see" speculative purchase though.
Finding them did also resolve a query I had on an unidentified bust of Lord Byron I had seen previously.
