Evening everyone.

After spending the last couple of years primarily making 72nd scale WW1 aircraft I found myself at a loose end between models (as you do) so I decided to re-arrange the display cabinet in the workroom. Lurking at the back of the 'figure' shelf I found this little fella who wasn't too far away from completion so decided to dust him off and break out the brushes . . .

Although sold as 'Geronimo' by Altores he barely has a passing resemblance to the famous leader who was a short pugnacious man to judge from the photo's. The gym honed body and abs that would be the talk of the beach notwithstanding the sculptor has created a lovely elegant figure full of character and life which I really enjoyed painting.

All done in my usual acrylics on a base made from pollyfilla with grit and dust added mounted onto one of Richards (Oakwood Studio) lovely wooden bases.

Few bits to touch up and I might add some dust to the lower legs to tie the horse to the base a bit more, but really pleased with the overall clean look :)

Back to the wingy things next . . .

Really nice work Paul. That will brighten up the cabinet, I’m sure!

Thanks Moby

Good to see you back at the figures,if only temporarily. Lovely, unusual colour on that horse!

Hi Neil, glad you like it. Bit of model horse buff and picked up a couple of lovely books just for modelling reference. The dun colour is based on photos of a Lusitano and fitted with my idea of a stolen 'Spanish breed' horse (The colouring is quite unusual since they are usually grey)
I was aiming overall for a man and animal that were of similar tones to the landscape with the only jarring items being the cut off jacket and headband (I originally painted the headband a sandy shade, but wanted to draw the eye to the face of the figure hence the slight change of tac.)

Yup, nice to see you back at the figures. Lovely job, the flesh tones are fantastic and it's a superb paint job overall. I like the subtlety of the tones and the colour harmony. Nice groundwork as well.

Cheers Nigel - got to keep my hand in ;)

Very nice figure and beautifully painted.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon. Appreciate it :D

Lovely, can you name the basic colors you used for the horse? I promised my daughter a horse painted by me, with a coat like Spirit.

Hi Young Biggles

Great to see you painting this , a cracking job on both figure and horse ...love the colour !

You’ve nailed those fleshtones as well

Nice presentation

Look forward to seeing this ......and your WW1 planes of course ...with some pilots

Why not support the competitions if you wish ( there’s a D Day 80 one as well )

Thanks for sharing

Look forward to seeing more

Have fun @ the aerodrome

Lovely, can you name the basic colors you used for the horse? I promised my daughter a horse painted by me, with a coat like Spirit.

I used acrylics only for this one -
The general tones were done in a mix of Japanese Uniform, Iraqi sand and a yellow from the Andrea paint set. Highlights had off white and light flesh added and shadows were deepened with a neutral grey and brown from the brown paint set. Then the fun starts. To get the final finish the colour is built up by painting areas with tiny strokes of paint (I add a touch of glaze medium to the colour to help it flow a bit) Work over the whole horse with different shades overlapping stokes in the direction of the hair growth until you get the effect wanted. For instance there are about 7 different 'flesh' shades used for the highlights and the shadows shades have purple, red-brown, grey and orange mixed in different areas.

I've seen some beautiful horses painted using oils and I'm sure you could get a similar effect using them, but I find this way of painting quite therapeutic and easy to adjust tones if needed so it suits me.

Hope that helps - it's not as bad as it sounds to do and you can keep going back at different times with the same shades if you're using a wet pallet and decide one area stands out too much :)
