I suppose this is old info to many, but this is the unique (in my day it was brand spanking new) method that Henri Lion used to do horses.
Years ago at a New England figure show, he did a seminar painting this way...it's particularly great for painting horses that are a bit shaggy, as the Przewalski's horse is. The texture is automatically there when complated...and this is just a beautiful version of that technique applied, Guy.
Super.

Thanks Phil. Henri is the one who taught me this technique. You'll see the horse finished in the next round of photos.

One thing I learned years ago that when you sit down at your bench to paint and if you don't feel like painting a particular figure you have started....DON"T......the quality will never equal what it will be when you can't wait to sit down and work on it. This is how its been with this kit I started a year ago. I only work on it when I feel like it......and it shows. I have no time limit on my own work and now that all my commission work is behind me I can enjoy once again painting just what I want to.....when I want to.

Enough rambling. I have proceeded with the dry-brushing again of the horse's very top of the muscles and have used white where I wanted to show the patches actually fading into white as on the real horses. I have also cut in the horse leather and harness and trimmed with 2 types of metal. The girth that goes under the belly was also finished so I could add the saddle in the next step.

The mane and tail were painted before adding to the horse and I have now added them.

The mane and tail will get another dry-brushing to further highlight them but I wanted to have them on the horse first to take advantage of how the light hits them.

Now its on to the saddle.

I use Humbrol #144 to base coat the saddle blanket and Humbrol Leather for the stirrup guards. These were blended and shaded before the dry-brushing began on them too.

Now it was getting close to the time to start on the figure and I wanted to attach the horse to the permanent base so I called my friend Ken Thomas and discussed what options there were for bases from the specs I gave him. I ended up buying 4 bases, 2 of each color veneer and put 3 aside for future projects. The wood under the veneer is oak with a veneer wrap. I told Ken he did not need to do the top as the complete top area would be groundwork to the edge of each side. So he brought up the veneer from the sides just enough to finish up the corner wrap.

Now, very carefully removing the horse from its work base I set the horse in position of where I wanted it and marked for drilling. After returning from the shop where I used my drill press I mounted the horse onto the base. The next project will be doing the groundwork before I add the remainder of the horse furniture. I will also continue to work on the horse some as I look at it more. The base size is 3" X 6" X 2 1/2" high.

So the above two photographs is where he is at now. This weekend I will mix up the groundwork sculpta-mold and work it in and around the horse's leg and bring the mix to the edge of the base.

All comments welcomed
