Hi Joe Hudson,

Just thought I would tell you how much I enjoyed your work on the Glasdiator - extremely well done. I was hopeing to see some mention in your text on how you painted the helmet - sadly I saw nothing. I was wondering if you could tell me what paints you used and your method. I love anything to do with ancient times, but I find painting parts in bronze, steel and copper very difficult. I've tried dry brushing but it doesn't look real somehow. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Very best regards - have a nice day.

Donald,

Here is how I painted the helment. It is hard sometimes to find something that I may have posted due to I tend to ramble in my writings! I am glad that you enjoyed the figure and I would love to see what you do. If I can be of any help just let me know.

It is very simple on how I achieved the look on the helment. The kit is a metal one so I polished it up and then took out Raw Umber oil paints and painted it onto the helmet. I then took a wide brush and wiped off the paint. I then used a paper towel to get the remaining paints off and this left me with what you see. I did go back and deepen some of the areas with RU and a touch of Mars black. I hope this helps.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Firstly, I want to thank you for your kind help. This is one of the reasons I took up painting in the first place, artists can be so kind when one needs some help.

Secondly, I would like to see some more of your artwork. And lastly, could I ask you a few questions, Joe?

(1) What paints do you use when painting metalic colours?
(2) How would you paint a Gladiator bronze helmet?
(3) How would you paint silver (ie a steel sword)?

Yes, Joe, looking at the above list you can clearly see I'm haveing trouble metalic colours.

Very best regards - have a nice day.
