G'Mornin Joe,

The tartan looks great and I too would love to know your technique for doing the plaid. I usually lay out the design with a paint pen.......how do you do yours?

Thank you everyone. I do all the tartans by eye. The reason for the acrylic flat coat is that I was using oils and the way the I would clean up a line is that I would use a brush with thinner on it and the acrylic flat kept the others colors from lifting.
When I use the acrylics it is just a matter of keeping the paint very thin and then going over the line many times to build the color up.

Gordy, If enough people would like an article I can try to do one for you. Let me know what needs to be done and how to go about it. :) Remember I don't have a license to drive this computer yet!

John,

I think the highlander that you are talking about was the Benito one. I have a close up of his tartan in the gallery.

Joe, I would love to see you do an article on plaids. I have the Elite 70mm Highlander but all that plaid keeps him in the closet. Let me know If I can be of help with the article.

Guy,

I will most definitely need your help. Is the highlander that you are talking about the one from Culloden? I am inclosing a few pictures of the one that I did a while back. I went to Culloden and the groundwork and the tuff in the cap came from the battlefield and from the marker of the Frasier's. This is my clan from my great....grandfather.

Hello Joe,
Yep, this is the one alright. I loved the piece since I saw it years ago and have been intimidated by it as well. I guess the right motivation will happen soon and I will tackle him. Would appreciate your help and tips on the tartan.

Guy,

This is a really nice figure and I would be glad to help anyway I can. Let me know how you are going to paint him, oils vs acrylics. I also have some other info on tartans. A real good source for some of the tartans comes from a mail order catalog, The Scottish Lion is the name, I think? I will check to make sure. It does not cost anything and is a great little reference.

Leigh,

Thank you very much. I painted this figure in acrylics except for the flesh and his tartan. I did paint the socks in the acrylics, this is where I first started experimenting. I did paint a seem down the back and had them join up. I am not sure if this is correct or if they should be offset, if anyone knows for sure I would love to hear.

Joe, Great job. I know what you mean about those laces, especially in that scale, they must have been a bear.~Gary

This has been a very inspiring thread! Seeing a figure through from early sculpting to (almost) finished piece has proved to me that it can be done! ;)
Thanks Joe! More threads like this please
