Good evening
We are pleased to present another bust for the historical line of our company:

Anglo-Norman Crusader, 1189

The study of the Crusades as a political, religious and social phenomenon still fascinates the modern point of view. It was an answer to the reality that defined life in the Middle Ages; a feudal society, with highly hierarchic classes, where the church dictated the religious, cultural and social standards.

Only with these concepts in mind we can understand the motivations for an individual to think of departing for the East to join a crusade against the infidels. Maybe for spiritual reasons, for the chance to create a new destiny in a far away kingdom, sense of duty or obedience to their masters, thousands of Christian soldiers went to Holy Land between 1095 y 1291.

In this bust we went for a crusader from the peak moment of this phenomenon, the Third Crusade. Our individual has a clear Norman look, a thriving people from that era of European history. These descendants of Viking settlers who established in the Normandy territory, conquered England on 1066 and expanded in areas of France, Sicily and Southern Italy. They had a huge impact both in culture and in the way of waging war.

The bust includes two options of Norman style helmets very common in all Europe in that time, one has the typical conical structure with an optional nose guard and the other is a "Phrygian" style helmet. It was very usual to paint these helmets with colors from the heraldry to preserve metal from exposure to elements. For the sword, we chose a type intermediate between models X and XI from the range established by Ewart Oakeshott to describe the medieval sword styles.

The painting interpretation portrays an English knight of Norman lineage, that could be at the king Richard I the Lionheart' service. Nevertheless, due to the impact that Normans caused on the military customs of that era, the bust can be used to portray a huge number of different subjects, from any nationality crusaders to feudal noblemen or members of the militant orders.

Very nice work indeed and an excellent paint job, great idea to have had the lesser helmet cast as well (y) only two little gripes really not so sure about the rosary beads and I'd have filled the body out so all the surcoat could be used but these are minor aesthetic gripes which in no way should be viewed as not liking this at all. Great job

Great sculpting by Pedro, and painting by Fernando. I like how the left hand is sculpted, being exposed from under the cloak. Alot of variations possible with this one. Congrats, H&V, Regards, SG:)(y)(y)

Face is great, vital starting point for a bust. And the mail texture looks very nice. Sure-fire winner here I think (y)

Really like this bust, and the optional helmets is a bonus. Superb sculpt and painting.

Wouldn't fancy using that sword in the heat of the crusades, or a rainy day in England, with that metal wrapped round the grip tho!

Hi!

Last week i though to leave a order in website, but unfortunatley i cant pay 10 euros for shipping service to Portugal - very expensive for shipping a bust:(
For example: 2 figures 54mm metal, shipped from Art Girona (near same location) i pay only 7.5 euros.
Pedro.
