hi Joe, i follow this thread with a lot of interesting, your work is really impressive
bravo

PS :
Gary do you think i can follow some example of uniform on your pictures for Chancellorsville ?

Thanks for helping

Seb.

Hi Joe, Lookin' good!

I agree with Radek, fig 4 does look like the figure from Bill Horan's 'Fight for the flag'.

Don't take this the wrong way, in fact quite the opposite! It is a good 'homage'. When I was learning to paint in oils on canvas, I recreated works by Gericault, and learnt so much from it! There are only so many poses the human body can strike.....and inevitably the same poses will crop up again and again. Anyone that wishes to push the envelope must first learn from those who preceded them.

Cheers,
Jon.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input. I think a stone/rock would be cool but i will have to wait and see about the wall section I do but let me run this idea past you...what about a bayonet in his hand?

Jon,

Thanks. I really try to see what the other really good modelers are doing and use them to try and improve my work, like you said. Thanks again for the input.

Joe

Yes, that is unless you are going to model a unit that you have documentation showing a specific uniform being worn.~Gary

Back to Joe's thread.

Well, dab nab it!!!!! I guess I have got to sculpt a rock!!!!!! LOL Thanks Gary I am sure it will make it that much more dramatic.

Joe

Joe, I guess this is based on what I've read in regards to usage of the bayonet during the Civil War. I thought that a stone/rock from a stonewall would be an acceptable alternative. There's nothing wrong with a closed fist, this just gives you another option. ~Gary

Also I think using a rock would add to the feeling of desperation as well as our primitive side?

Ok, my two brass coins worth of opinion.....

context, context, context.....

- We'll always have a fist to use, issued at birth as a matching set
- I'd only grab a rock if I'd been knocked to the ground, and/ or it was convenient to grab (happens in the movies all the time, not so often in real life). bending over in the middle of close combat...hmm.....maybe, maybe not
- sculpting a rock is simple enough, but painting it up as a rock may not carry over too well (Mommy, why is that man holding a potato in the middle of a fight?)
- Actually, a knife/ rock / fist is a simple switch out, and would not involve odious amounts of sculpting, depending on the look achieved & desired

So perhaps a step back, and some thoughts of the preceding few minutes of this moment in time, and how the players got there.

Fist works fine, knife adds more tension to the moment (who gets it first?) where as the fist adds a more natural, improvised defense. I'm trying to keep in mind all those elements when I give feedback

Cheers

Hey guys,

Thanks alot for the input. I have the new hand and rock finished and will post the new pictures hopefully soon. I guess if I get off the computer I could get busy! lol

Thanks again and I hope that it is an improvement.

Joe

Well, here he is with the rock/stone. I wanted to make it look like he just grabbed it and is either going to throw it or try to smash the other figure with it. I hope it appears this way.

Thanks again,

Joe

Joe, It looks good. There are other alternatives as to what to put into his hand, some work some don't. Maybe your central focus could be a flag bearer and this guy is helping to defend the flag. Just be sure to have enough loose rocks/stones so people can make sense of why this guy has one in his hand. I think it'll help add to other "eye candy" you could include in this scene. ~Gary
