I'm nowhere near the level of being able to sculpt figures myself but I had a bit of a revelation yesterday when I realised that Blender can be used to add a skeleton to an STL file. I found the file for some decent hands on Cults and fitted an armature to them and now I can adjust them to whatever shape I need. All I have to do now is get the size right and all my figure building hand needs are solved.

This is pretty exciting, I have also found some half decent heads (although I wish there were more out there to work with).

I suppose I have 2 questions for the experts out there; firstly what are the limitations of this technique? It looks like it is adjusting the skin textures automatically and they look good enough to work in 1/16 scale, is that fair? Could the same thing work with whole figures? I was wondering about getting a file for a basic human body, posing it in Blender and then using that as an armature for putty over the top, does that seem like it should work?

There are a lot of free "base mesh" files for free out there and others that won't cost you much. Check out the "store" site for Artstation as they have a number of meshes available. www.artstation.com

Thanks Gary, sorry I didn't spot your post.

I've been playing with rigging and so on and now have a full figure I can pose which is proving handy, I just need to work out how to modify faces now.

My current figure will eventually be fully rigged. Although this will solve or aid with posing a figure there will still be a certain amount of work needing to be done to the clothing to make it look convincing. For those using Zbrush I imagine a hand could be rigged using Zspheres if that is the only software available to you.

I'm happy to share the Blender file, the original was free so I'm pretty sure I won't be breaching any rules/ethical codes.
Hi Stefan,

I actually grabbed this hand and it's "grasping" right hand cousin from Cults fairly recently. Mirrored them both in Blender and printed them all off in 1/16 for some of my own uses. The detail holds up very well.

That skeleton feature you discovered in Blender looks great. I'd love to get a copy, if I can get it from you (not sure how to do that in PF yet). I suppose there's a tutorial out there somewhere on how to use this feature. Prior to this, I had designed and printed off a handful of rough palm models with holes for fingers and thumb wires to try to sculpt hands from scratch...so-so results. This looks much better.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,
Doug
