I've started the Harbinger of Death from Galapagos Miniatures.
It is a big lump of resin, with some very fine details, and lots of lovely texture (my drybrushes are evil, and must be punished...).

I've started blocking in the areas that will receive a lot of dry brushing, leaving the details till after. His horse will be black, and his robes will be a variety of dark greys. I'm not 100% sure how I'll do the tail and bottom of legs, I'm thinking of fog like substance (like what he emerges from), but not sure about colours yet. If any..

I agree. You have started quite a project. Definitely a painting challenge. Will be following with great interest.

Welcome aboard gents :).

I'm already enjoying this one very much, because I particularly like painting this kind of figures, dressed in old faded robes, I have a troop of Warhammer Chainrasps which I paint inbetween sessions, just as something different for fun. I have been practising different techniques with my Army Painter drybrushes, they really suit this kind of project.

I've got the main greys for the robes blocked in, now for a small amount of shading, and lots of washes and dry brushing.
I'm also changing tack a little. I'm still having some issue with the paint rubbing off at some high points (even when I dont handle that part ), and as it's such a large and heavy piece, it's difficult to get it mounted on a painting handle, so holding the piece is inevitable. I'm going to base coat the horse (which I'm holding the figure by) head, neck and rear portion with Tamiya, with the airbrush. I want to try something else with Tamiya aswel.

Yes when this one was released it certainly got the ideas bouncing around inside the old head especially how to blend it into something/groundwork where the lower regions of the piece just fade away into nothing, personally I have been watching out for 75 -80mm Zombie type figures or skeletons that are reaching up out of the earth that with a little bit of converting could be made to look like the souls of the dead and possible hide the absence of the horses legs etc to some degree, other than that if anyone knows how to suspend small puffs of smoke in the same place for a lot of years then lets hear it.
Following with interest before I drag this guy up from the tomb of the grey army.

That is a very good idea Terry, I like it. But they dont have to be a similar scale to the Harbinger, infact, you've given me an idea.... Warhammer have lots of figures suitable for such a display, and let's face it, nobody's ever told us how big the Harbinger actually is. I could imagine him as a very large apparition, towering over those about to demise.

I also seen a work in progress lately on PF or Putty and Paint by one of the Sergey's (I THINK) where he was sculpting a ruined cavern like scene with buried skeletons etc that would have tied in nicely with this figure but I was unsure of the scale.

Yes, I've seen that too. Again, as long as the different elements/scales are in context, different scales should work together. A challenging project for sure..

Todays progress. Blocked the head and neck in with Tamiya Matt Black, so I can handle it. I've started the washes on the robes, this is going to darken it considerably, after which I'll lighten things up to taste with the drybrushes.

I love these subjects, I'm certainly looking for more like this. I already have my eye on one or two.. I'll post some pictures of the Chainrasps later.

Anyway, I woke up middle of the night last night, and decided to have a quick session with the brushes. As you do.
The cowl has had two washes with Citadel Skeleton Horde. I know, Citadel names are odd, but for this subject they are rather apt
The robes had a wash of Agrax Earthshade and some detail washes with Vallejo Black Green ink. Then a drybrush of the base colour Dark Charcoal, progressively lightened with Dark Sand.
I've tried out a mix of GW Beaten Copper and Citadel Leadbelcher for the horses armour, which I like.
