I saw the Houser monument in pieces at the Shidoni foundry in Santa Fe a while back. The horse's head was lying on the main square in Santa Fe for at least 2 years.
Story I heard was that he was originally commissioned to sculpt 12 different bronzes. He went ahead and did the Onate piece way bigger than originally agreed and was almost 10 years late. Not sure of the fate of the other commissions. You gotta admire the sales job he did.

There were charges of racism, oppression of natives, white triumphalism, etc.
