Can anyone advise what colour the drum shell would be for a French Napoleonic “kettledrum” of the Empress Dragoons of the Guard? Working on the Mike Blank figure of Victor Barre and there is a section of the drum showing where the drum banners are tied at the rear.

Would the shell be brass or silver or other than the embroidered banner was it covered in cloth/or painted ( in which case any idea of colour?)

Many thanks

Neal.

Dear Neal
Glad to hear you are painting the Victor figure, can´t wait to see it finished!
As for the drum, the E Dragoons did not use the ordinary kettledrum but rather a larger standard drum (Tenor drum/bass drum?) and I would assume these where made from wood, probably painted. Very much like the drums used by the mounted troops of the Ancien Regime.
Hope this helps some. Anyway, enjoy the painting!
All the best
Mike

there is conflicting information--many give kettledrums but more probably they were using bass drums.

In any case, the Kettledrums were made of brass.

Hi Mike,

Thanks very much for the info, it’s really appreciated. Enjoying the figure and like the cheeky almost aloof expression you’ve given him. Looking forward to the next instalment in the series.

All the best

Neal

Hi Ivo,

Many thanks for the info-I think I just used the term kettledrum as a generic term. The drum is, as Mike and yourself have pointed out a lot larger and longer than what might be termed a ‘conventional style’ kettledrum. Would you still say brass for the bass drum or wood/painted as Mike suggests?

Thanks again

Neal
