Many thanks Huw,I'll add some notes on the tunic painting on the next update, what sort of paint do you use ?

Thanks Brian. I'm presently replacing enamel underpainting with acrylics but am heading in the direction of oils for flesh, horses and leather and acrylics for the rest but I'm always trying to learn more about painting.

Cheers

Huw

hi mick,i normally work from the head down and on this particular bust I'm painting the belts and straps first then the tunic, the ammo box and hands plus water bottle and bag I shall complete after the tunic and finish with the cuffs.
I only undercoat in acrylics as I finish in oils so I cant offer you any tips as your an acrylic painter, however I look forward to seeing your version as well (y)

That's ok huw,I will list the colours and process I use in painting reds with oils,i like my reds to have a campaign and worn / faded look about them,i suppose you could adapt my oil mixes to your acrylic finishes (y)

Quick aside please.
Is there any advantage to undercoating with acrylics rather than enamels, which I use, when using oils?
I don't want to turn your thread into a complete tutorial. ( Oh yes he does )

Hi Jon,the reason why I undercoat using acrylics is because they dry quicker than enamels, with enamels you normally need to wait about 8 hours before they dry, however with acrylics,I can start painting within the hour with oils.(y)
