I am not a Napoleonic fan - don't ask why, but I truly appreciate the work and art involved. This is such a great looking subject - love the setting and the paint so far is excellent.

Small update on this one, managed a couple of hours today,so I decided to focus on the rolled greatcoat on top of the knapsack and the covered mess tin,i intend to just go back in and refine these 2 articles before completion of them.
A little grime was added to the face to tie in with the conditions of the day and heat of battle,i will start on the musket next and the shoulder wings and straps.
The mess tin need a little more shadow and will be satin varnished on completion to represent the wax like material the guards used to cover the mess tin.

Well you've gone and done it know haven't you Brian ?.....

And well worth the effort too.
Others have commented on various aspects of how good this is Brian.
So all that's left for me to remark on, is that the piece is looking super and in particular the upper part of the backpack you have been working on has a great look to it, it looks really good and waxy already.
I thought the mess tin cover was black, or am I misreading the post?

Best wishes

Paul.

Hi Paul, thanks for the coments, the mess tin is normally covered on campaign in a wax like material,I need to darken it again,I seem to have lost the black colour (y)

No mate you ain't lost it, black oil washes will bring it back and this colour will show through won't it. I paint leather belts like that weather the edges and washes with the darker colour to soften.
It's gonna be 'champion' is that.

Have a good day.

It's coming along very nicely.
Looking forward to seeing the musket .... your painting of wood is always spot-on.
