Hi guys,

Last night I started a new project, a conversion of Young Miniature's Pirate bust to an English Highwayman.

The bust is a group build project being undertaken by several members of the Historical Military Figures Society of Western Australia, and is being very well supported by Ian Harries ("busso boy") at Empire Hobbies and Young Miniatures. Thanks Ian and Young:D:D:D

Rather than simply build and paint this bust OOB, I decided to convert him. I was not planning to include the monkey anyway;), and once I decided it was going to be a converted bust, I decided to go all the way and make major changes.;)

I used my dremel to grind off most of the surface details and texture on the upper body, and I plan to sculpt the right arm holding a pistol across his chest using Super Sculpey Firm Grey.

Hope you like it. Any comments/ suggestions are welcome.

Cheers Carl, like you I've got quite a few projects on the go at the moment. This one will take some time, so I'll work on it in small stages over the coming weeks and months.

Thanks Andreas, I appreciate your comments mate.

Hopefully some of the other HMFS members who are doing this bust will post some WIP pics soon and we can all see what they're doing -hint hint. C'mon Khogor and Figure Lover (Scott & Ben), let's see your pics guys!!

Great idea for a conversion mate and you are of to good start, nice to see you sculpting again, thought for a moment you had given it up and gone back to solely painting :)

G'day Steve, and thanks mate I appreciate your encouragement. To be honest I've been itching to sculpt something again but couldn't find a project that I really wanted to do (and was within my limited capabilities). I'll be seeking your help when it comes time to sculpt the hand holding the pistol.

Hi Carl,

Thanks for your comments mate. I hope I can do a good job on him.

Hi Dave, thanks mate. I must admit the Pirate bust didn't appeal to me either (particularly that stupid monkey on his back) but a Highwayman is also a Pirate, just a little drier than most.

That's a great conversion. How do you come to the idea.
I never had these idea's to convert something....and i must admit i don't have the guts.
Great work Tony, and looking forward to your next step.

Marc

Hi Marc,

The hat was the key to the conversion for me. It's typical of the sort worn by Highwayman in the movies, such as Dick Turpin. Practically everything else on the original bust has been sanded off with the dremel or changed with Super Sculpey.

By the way Marc, you've now made 9,999 posts on pF. One more and you get a free set of steak knives.

Hi guys,

Here's some updated pics. I'm curious to know how you guys sculpt hands, particularly hands holding pistols. Do you make a wire frame for each finger and wrap the wire onto the pistol grip or do you simply sculpt the hand straight onto the pistol?? Any advice/ suggestions would be welcome as I've never sculpted hands before.
