Hey there tony... you know I am stuck to where you are at "hands". I am thinking about switching to the super sculpy. I am sure you have done some research but thought this was interesting. I have used this technique and it seems to work quite well... as a trial of course. The problem with supersculpy is that it is too soft but very flexable and blends well without the addition of water. Its sculpting doll hands but a few tweaks you can end up with a nice looking pair of hands Haha. Hope it helps and thank you for you comments on mine.

you are making some nice progress there mate.
As for the hands you have more options in this larger scale. I think for this i would sculpt a basic palm attached to the pistol and then for the individual fingers with wire and then coat them with putty, once dry i would carve a little to get the right shape and refine them. The benefit of this method is you can pose each finger individual with the wire so you dont have to have each finger wrapped around the pistol grip tight together, you can have a couple slightly raised to add more detail and effect.
Best bet is to get a suitable prop and hold it like you want the sculpt to be and take a picture for some reference, you can try a few different poses with the fingers to see what looks best this way.

Hope this helps mate even though i did dribble on a bit

Stand and deliver. . .

As a boy, above is supposedly the word that the highwaymen shouted to
the unaware. Wow, Tony, I almost completely missed this one. A great
idea. And you're doing a very nice job with it. Eager to see more WIP and
see where this interesting project is going.

Glad I caught it before it is too late. . .

Tony,
good to see your WIP, looking forward to your paint work - particularly if you revisit some of the techniques used on Master & Commander!

Steve advice is good, and I am going to use a similar technique for sculpting some hands gripping motorcycle handles.

make up a putty blob approximate shaped as a hand, then use the carving method to get the shape I wish..... pinching the idea form a UK modeling mag, for all I know (as the article isn't on front of me) it may have been Steve's article anyway! :)

The idea being the fit is then perfect, and avoids the odd grips that the 1/35 infantry seem to have with their weaponry.

Good work so far, keep it up

Cheers

Hi Rob, thanks for your commentsmate. I'd describe myself as a painter who occasionally sculpts. I've only completed one sculpted bust so far, so I'm still a beginner.

I haven't received an email from you, so perhaps you could resend it please.

Hi Derek, thank you very much for your comments and the link to the tutorial on doll hands.

G'day Steve, thanks very much for your very helpful "dribble". I'll try your technique and see how it works. I really appreciate your encouragement with my sculpting.

Hi Rick, thanks mate. I was planning to call this bust "Stand and Deliver". I still have a lot of sculpting to do but I'm keen to get my brushes on it.

Thanks Jamie, yes I'll be following Steve's advice and hopefully we can both make some nice hands for our figures. I'm looking forward to seeing someprogress pics on your wedding project too mate.

Hi Marc, yes it was a joke, but probably it lost something in translation. My point was to congratulate you on such a long and substantial contribution to Planet Figure over the past 7 years and to thank you for all the support and encouragement you've given to modellers around the world.

And it is only 6 years. But nevertheless
You make my blushing.

Tony, Tony, Tony, trust you to go one step above. Love what you are doing with the bust, I wouldn't have though of that in a million years. And sort of keeping in with the theme, well done.
I will have to post some pictures of my progress, though not much has changed since you saw it last weekend. Even still, I am happy with how it is turning out
Ben

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your comments mate. I guess a Highwayman and a Pirate are birds of a feather, so it seems to be in keeping with our theme. Theidea of converting him to a Highwayman resulted froma discussion with Chris Walden at last week's meeting. See what you miss out on when you don't come!!!;)

I've been adding more details to the cloak and have sculpted the right hand. I took me a few tries, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome. All that's left to do now is to add a collar to the cloak, add the flint and breech to the pistol and some small details and the painting can begin.(y)

Any comments/ suggestions are welcome.:)

hey tony,

nice work so far. I have some critics though.

the hand looks nice but its too small. also the gun looks odd in this pose. You could bend down the gun a bit, then it would look better.Hope you can understand my explaination.

best regards:)

Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Thank you very much for your comments mate. I agree with you about the size of the hand, and I've been adding more putty on it today. As for the angle of the pistol, I can't change that without having to rebuild the hand again, as it's pinned to the arm.

I'll post some more pics soon.

Tony you are doing well mate for a first try at sculpting a hand, i would put hand sculpting up there with head sculpting for difficulty, i have often got the scale wrong with hands and had to resculpt them. I think if you add some volume to the fingers and the area where the thumb protrudes from the hand it will help, also i think the forearm need bulking up a bit more.

What clay you working in ?

Nice start mate,

Steve(y)

"Stand and Deliver" continues. . .

Hi Tony:

Well, you're moving along quite well. I didn't realize from the earlier pix
that there would be the two ends of the "scarf" flowing in the wind
at the back of his head. I really like that part and think it adds a lot to
this very interesting project. Yes, I think the hand was too small as well,
and you're beefing that up. One thing that may help is to use the face as
a way of helping with proportions of the hand. Go to the bathroom mirror
and hold your extended hand next to your face. And then hopefully, you
can better approximate the size of the hand from the face on the bust.

Lastly, Tony, I would suggest a cuff on his right sleeve that is larger and
has a bigger opening. I seem to remember that from that century's
great coats. But you're having fun, . . . and that is the main thing. Eager
to see more WIP photos. . .

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your critique on the hand. I agree with allyour suggestions and have taken steps to address each point you made. I have the arm piece in the oven as I type this, and I hope to post some new pics later this evening.

I'm using Super Sculpey Firm Grey, which is the same stuff I scupted my previous bust from. It's been so hot here lately that most of my Sculpey block has hardened and I have to scoop out the pliable bits from the centre of the block. I'll keep it in the fridge in future.

Hi Rick, thank you for your comments and your suggestions. The sleeve cuff was a bit of an after-thought to be honest. I wasn't quite sure if it was appropriate as the sleeve is part of a leather jacket he's wearing underneath his oil skin cloak. I don't want my Highwayman to look too prosperous, but rather I wanted him to be rather grubby and weather beaten. You can assume that anything he's wearing that looks even slightly expensive, he stole.

I am having fun with this bust, and I'm particularly enjoying the process of sculpting again. Thanks once again for following my progress and encouraging me.

Hi Marc, thanks for your comment my friend. I certainly hope this conversion is the first of many I try to do.

I've pretty much finished the sculpting now. I've bulked up the hands, the fingers and the forearm, and I think those changes make a real difference. I'll give the bust a good sanding to smooth off any little bumps and bits, and then it's done.

Next step is to prime and start painting.:D I'll post the next series of pics on a new thread on my VBench. Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and support on this thread.(y)

Much better now mate and i like the slighly raised little finger, very nice.

I have been looking at trying out some of the supersculpey firm after enjoying working with the supersculpey, might just order some i think.

All the best mate,

Steve(y)
