Whilst dealing with Oils, does anyone have a recipe to depict a base Khaki colour, with recommended additions for highs and lows;). Looking at a WW1 'Commonwealth' Bust!

Any help would be welcomed!

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I'm also working on a WW1 bust at the moment. For the khaki I first mixed some Lemon Yellow with a spot of black to get an opaque olive green then added raw sienna until it looked about right (to my dodgy eyes anyway). My target was somewhere between green and brown, maybe leaning a bit more towards brown. I used Vallejo English Uniform as an undercoat which was a good guide for the colour. I highlighted with base mix + Naples Yellow Hue and shaded with base mix + Raw Umber.

My project crept into a recent post about a drying box so I'll post a link in next post so you can check it out. Its not a great photo but it should give you an idea and you can decide for yourself if you think it looks right or not.

Cheers lads!(y)

Very helpful,.. ;) ..So, maybe its a case of arsing around with hues and shades of different, types of yellow & black, as that seems to be the general consensus!

Thanks,

Mark

Basically it's a case of mixing a yellow with a black & then using a brown to modify the initial green. I've seen Mars Yellow/Mars Black used as the base to which I think I'd be tempted to add Burnt Umber gradually until the colour FEELS right. I think I'd be tempted to try Warm Sepia for initial shades & Naples Yellow Light for highlights both worked wet in wet. Bearing in mind campaign & supply issues I'm not sure just how hard & fast the colours might be. Also I have a feeling that Officer uniforms might have just a suggestion of a more green value.
I haven't tried anything yet although God knows how many WW1 Commonwealth busts I've got - I blame Carl Reid!

Cheers Richie,

I know this clip, and forgot about it, but mine did not have audio! ;)

Right then, the first line of mixes are what I am after! (y)
