I recently finished the Tamiya 120mm Rommel figure
I have noticed however that the super glue has fogged the the goggles.
Can this be fixed or is there another way of repairing them????
TIA and cheers

Chris

PS:have posted on a couple other sites.

Hello Chris,

The safest way to attach clear parts is PVA glue. That is the common 'office' glue they use for paper, wood, etc. No fogging nor crazing and much sturdier than one may think.

Quang is right, it dries virtually clear (Elmers glue or the like). Testors sells a "clear parts" glue for gluing plane cannopies and such that seems to work fairly well to. Available at virtually any hobby store. CA does craze, I would stay "clear" of it! HA! Sorry, not at your expense, just had to lighten up your situation a tad. Good Luck!

Hi Chris, You can file and sand clear plastic down to a scale thiness, then use progressivley finer sand paper until the part is smooth and the scratches from sanding are gone. This works best if you only sand one side. Then apply Future floor wax to the part, and let dry. It magically becomes clear again!

In the olden days we used to use toothpaste on aicraft canopies. They came out crystal clear. Basically its a polishing compound. Nor sure if it will work after you graze the plastic.

As others have said above, there are a number of ways to fix the clear part. The easiest is likely to go your nearest well stocked hobby store and buy a Squadron tri-grit sanding stick. Start with the coarsest and work your way down to the finest grit. Follow this up with nice buff with some plastic polish (Tamiya makes it in tubes) and then coat it with Future as suggested above and you're back in business. You can also get a Micromesh polishing set which is a more advanced version of the tri-grit stick.

Edit: Oops. I didn't notice the first time I read your post that the clear lens had already been installed into the goggles. Maybe kind of tough to do any sanding without removing the lens. You could try just a straight application of Future - I have made fogged aircraft canopies look a little better doing this. In your situation, I suppose it would depend on which side of the lens is fogged.

Good luck.

Hey Chris,

It's may be simpler than you think!

In my experience, the easiest way would be to gouge out  the goggle lenses and replace them by new ones made from the clear material (acetate or styrene) found on a variety of packaging like blisters, etc...

The clear sheet is cut to size and forced into the google openings. The result is very realistic. I did it many, many times in my IPMS days when I replaced the bezels on the instrument panels of my model airplanes.

Sounds difficult but it can be done. It's just a matter of try and fit. Also I was much younger then! :D

Hi Quang

Thanks for the tip.
I neglected to mention that my problem was with the Gas Goggles worn by Rommel.

Cheers

Chris
