Sorry for mentioning the words gun control guys, although I'd like to point out that I proposed not to discuss this actually. Let's leave this to other forums, by all means.
Just for the record, I'm perfectly fine with Americans choosing their own laws, and loving their AK-47s, if they like. There are days when I would love to have one myself.

Coming back to the flag, I realized I have one of those somewhere. Bought it when I was a student, thought it looked cool. What did I know.
I also once owned an East-German flag. Sold that to a teenager collecting GDR stuff (born after 1990!). Maybe we should worry about that guy now....?

Cheers
Adrian

In my opinion (and it's only that), this thread is turning itself inside out, it was originally about political correctness. Historical discussion should be carried out on a wet winter night preferably with a decent amount of booze going round:), and the finer points of the US Constitution regarding gun control should be left ( God help me for saying it) to the lawyers.
There is that revolting old phrase " political correctness gone mad". Well it can't go mad because it's already barking!
The politically correct are very very small people who get an almost sexual thrill from displaying their pious malice and banning everything they think we shouldn't like. It was the politically correct of the time (I'm aware of the irony), the abolitionists, who DEMANDED that the South should pay for it's crimes in blood, and they weren't too bothered who did the bleeding. The families of the victims were decent and dignified, these -------people will use anything to promote their bile!
Let's start a new campaign "It's time to ban the banners!"
Best wishes, Gary.

I have absolutely no issue with the displaying of these colours!. Just so long as they are fitting!

I suppose they're going to have to do a remake of "The Dukes of Hazard" and repaint the General, with a smiley.

What happened, was very sad. Its also sad that a historical flag, is being used for something it wasn't intended for.
To me it represents the South (Confederacy) during the ACW and nothing else.

In my opinion PC can go a little over the top, like health and safety, and that's another story.
Don't get me started on that one. PLEASE.

I'd normally tell you to behave or have a cold shower,, but in this instance, I'm with you on this one.;)

It's all the usual knee jerk reaction after the event isn't it.

None of this is my politics,I have already upset someone on this forum talking about the ethics of weapons in private hands.
We had a problem in britain a while back with the union flag being appropriated by an extreme political group, and in ulster whole communities held up and flew 'their' flag every day to upset those of the other 'persuasion''

But........I have never seen a flag set out to kill someone.

I'm surprised that this political discussion is allowed to flourish here. However since few have properly addressed the core concerns of WE THE PEOPLE of the United States, I must elaborate.

We Americans have no intention of just acquiescing and giving up ANY of our Constitutional rights, paramount the 2nd. We are (or were) the most free, liberty loving nation because the 2nd insures that WE THE PEOPLE are able ultimately to preserve the others. The removal of the Confederate flag not only violates the living memory honoring the South's fallen dead and State's rights, it should be a concern to ALL Americans. Because the POTUS is attempting to remove the 1st Amendment rights by cherry picking to suit his agenda.
For those who say that the State's Rights are no longer relevant, witness it in action when gay marriage and legalizing of pot was voted upon and put into law by individual states (most of whom fought AGAINST the idea during the Civil War ironically), but not by the Federal Government. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. And thus we are more than a bit indignant in the South currently.

I know that the political powers around the world are foaming at the mouth in their ardent hope that our current dictator-in-chief will be successful in stripping us slowly of all of our liberties via arms seizure, however we are never going to allow that without fighting to the core to resist such tyranny. We have not survived as THE go to place of immigration for those who seek freedom by disregarding the very principles upon which our nation was formed. The rest of the world be damned quite frankly.

Enjoy living under your own individual government, but do NOT ramrod your philosophies down our throats. Wars have been fought over that very issue, certainly you have learned by now. In addition, it bears reminding that we have spilled more than a bit of American blood helping others in the world to gain or keep THEIR freedom during our history. There were no complaints about us from those who begged for our help then.

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
-Benjamin Franklin

It is not and never was the Confederate flag it is the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia and up to very late in the war was only used in Virginia.A great many Americans north and south know very little of their own history. There was one so called southern expert on a BBC morning show who speaking expertly on the flag said it was based on the cross of ST George

Well said Pete ! I thought I was the only person that knew that

Well said Mike, I wish I were as eloquent. As far as the political talk, it seems allowed as long as it is bashing the U.S., seems to be considered clever and intellectual here. Whatever, I come here for the figures.....the arrogance here is free. LOL.

Have you been in Belfast Paul , it is one place that could do without any flags of any type

How the hell did this thread develop into US bashing , it was a simple statement about PC going tits up as it always does :)

No US-bashing for me Mike and Steve!
Got too many friends from there and like your beautiful homecountry too much. Fire arms legally in the hands of nearly everybody - even automatics that weren`t there when the 2nd amendment was created - lead to different conclusions that`s all.
In my professional life I had to look into surveys made about the "perfect" society with or without legal access to fire arms and can tell that there is no perfect solution. As Colin said the topic of the thread was PC. Let`s leave it there.
All the best!
Martin

To go a bit off thread, personally I've got no time for AK47's Sten guns Glocks etc. They're stamped out by a machine and are totally soulless. Give me a finely crafted Lancaster Valley Long Rifle with barrels lovingly hand forged, or a fine pair of Manton Duellers, or a magnificent Hawken Plains Rifle, or an early Colt revolver Those are my idea of real boat floaters(y)
