This seems to be one of those cases where scientists undertake strange experiments on hapless creatures...
In this case, Dr Nap has successfully merged "Lucy" - our common African ancestor - with one the biggest mammals of our times to create, on his keyboard a one-off whonkey, the so-called Humpback Ape (Megaptera afarensis napus)...:D
Cheers

Super work with the whale Adrain, and thank you for your S.B.S..
That was some very intricate work.
I missed being able to comment on 'Lucy' since I still hadn't joined PF, so it was nice to see this again.
Hence my belated comment of 'excellent work' on your earlier presentation.

Cheers,
Andrew

Thanks guys.
Nap is helping me add an old thread about Lucy (from 2013; how time flies) to my vBench and it has been temporarily mixed with my recent whale thread. Trust they will be disentangled soon.

Cheers,
Adrian

Thanks for you responses and likes guys! Glad you like it.

Here’s some background on how I did the water:

1. Mould made of plexiglass. Sea surface was sculpted with wax on a sheet of plastic card that was held up by a cardboard spacer. This had an opening to fit the whale. The waves were shaped around it. The whale’s tail was already painted.

The spacer:

2. Next was pouring silicone rubber over the waves.

3. Next step was to pour plaster over the silicone rubber. This was to keep the silicone rubber in place during the next steps, and to prevent leaking of epoxy past the silicone layer. It also fixed the whale in position temporarily.

4. Turning the whole thing upside down and removing the cardboard spacer, plastic sheet and waves sculpted in wax.

5. Pouring the epoxy resin, hardening and removing the plexiglass mould to reveal the rough cast.
