I know I haven't finished the bust, just waiting for a wooden base thingy to put him on before final construction (OK putting his hat on) and a completed thread.

I have been working on these chaps in the background and will concentrate on the Husare from Spain in this WIP. The other one still has some work needed before he can be painted, he will be an Italian Maggiore del Regimento Piemonte Reale Cavalleria in grand uniform...

So just quickly, he started life as parts supplied in this case by Miniart, all the detail was removed, adjustments to pose sorted and a Hornet head plonked on his shoulders. I used post it note paper for his trouser stripes and haversack strap. The pouch belt is Magicsculpt and cap lines are thin lead wire. He will have a sword which is a Hostorex piece length reduced to fit.

He just needs a final check for defects etc and I'll add another thin coat of cellulose primer.

hahahahaha......... that is not a must he,that you first finish the bust, doing another thing like this can be very good to put you away from
it and then is it going better ;) and this is already looking very nice (y) I always doing 2 busts, figures att the same time, why not

It started when I painted flats in oils, I might have up to 10 pieces on the go at the same time, letting paint dry while I did something else. It also helps me keep my skills up, if I don't paint for a long while it takes time before I am happy with it again, same with the sculpting.

Congrats for to sculpt a Pavia's Hussar. Very nice addition and a colorful subject too!
The original plate is by Cusachs a very talented spanish military painter, he was a former Army officer and he painted at his comrades with full detail and sharp.

Both will be beautiful figures. I await more updates!!!!.... :) :)

Anto, many thanks for your interest, I shall have to look the artist up, I have a fair collection Spanish military illustrations on my Pintrest account. I hope to do more Spanish subjects in time because I am really taken with them and the variety. Same with the Italians, Belgians, German and French all from the same sort of period.

OK so I skipped the second coat of cellulose primer and base painted in Vallejo Off White.

I started the face a little darker than usual with Vallejo Light Brown as a base. I am also hoping I learnt something painting that enormous face on the bust, I'll let you be the judge of that, if I have learnt something it'll be interesting to see how long the lesson lasts.

Anyway, the shade is Scale 75 African Shadow plus in the darkest recesses a touch of Citadel Rhinox Hide with Vallejo Amaranth Red and a slight touch of Vallejo Game Bloody Red to put the blush in his cheeks.

My initial high light was Vallejo Brown Sand, working up to Reaper Tanned Skin then Tanned Skin Highlight. Must admit it's nice to be painting a small face again!

I spent the morning blocking in colour for the stable jacket, overall, leather booting, boots and pouch belt.

The jacket is S75 Blood Red, I intend using a lighter tone of red for the highlights. The overalls are S75 Deep Blue I will be highlighting with S75 Navy Blue and shading with a black, not sure which just yet. The collar and cuff facing colours are black, I have laid in Vallejo Dark Grey as a mid tone and the black leatherwork is all base coated with S75 Red Leather so I can give them a rich warm hue.

Wow, you are incredibly prolific Simon. These are looking great so far, great choice of interesting subjects and lovely conversion work as always.

Many thanks Nigel, I was making these two along side painting the bust so I was able to go straight to painting on this one. Just one Austrian knot to.make on the Italian and he'll be ready to go.

Progress from yesterday afternoon and some work this morning.

The leather booting on the overalls has been highlighted with glazes of first Vallejo Flat Red, then Vallejo Orange Brown. This was all cut back with a couple of controlled washes of Army Painter Matt Black. This morning the highlights were strengthened with Vallejo Light Brown, this will need cutting back again with black and hopefully should done.

The overalls have been highlighted first with S75 Navy Blue and then with the same plus S75 Caspian Blue. I will do another round of highlights with the last mix plus a touch of Vallejo Deep Sky Blue. Just very subtle high high lights though.

Catch up on today's frustrating painting session. The red stable jacket wasn't playing ball, or more accurately the paint wasn't. Not entirely happy with it, I'll revisit it tomorrow. It has been back and forth with highlights and washes to re-establish the bright reds, S75 Antares Red, highlights have been Vallejo Amaranth Red, actually a bright orange and that was further highlighted with Vallejo Light Orange. This created far too high a highlight but I do this and then re-establish the red with controlled washes, it let's the much lighter colours show through while making them appear to be a lighter red. The lace is so far just straight S75 Sol Yellow.
