Last time I was in The Hobbit, a store in Fayetteville, NC. I think I saw this one. I'm sorry, I don't have their number right now. Ask for Rick, he'll track down anything

Keep a search going on Ebay....and don't rush in and pay over the odds. They come up fairly regularly. I picked up all 6 in the series over about a year for well under £40

Gentlemen, thank you ! Good tips ! (y) think I may be able to get one ;)

Del : since you have these figures, they're 1/12 but are they really much larger than 120mm figures ? I had one 25 years ago which I painted with humbrol metalcote, and seem to recall it was not really that much taller - in fact I vaguely recall the head in the kit was something like a verlinden 120mm head in size, and could maybe be replaced by one ?
What's your view on this ?

Isn't that just a reboxing of one of the old Aurora knights, and if so, isn't it currently available from Revell-Monogram? If so, you should be able to find it new in your LHS or online.

Prost!

Johan, I just had a look at Siegmund and compared it to my only Verlindens. I'd say the Verlinden heads are a shade too big but both of mine are a Hun and a Mongol so might not be typical. Actually the Siegmund head isn't that bad and even if you wanted to display it bare ,a very little work on the hairstyle and maybe a break in the nose would look great.
Cheers

Hi Brad,
The Imai “Armoured Knight Series” has 6 figures, in chronological order
Kurfurst Freidrich I (Elector Freidrich I
Erzherzog Siegmund (Archduke Siegmund of Tyrol
Pfalzgraf Otto Heinrich (Elector Otto Heinrich
Philip Graf Hessen (Count Philip
Kaiser Maximilian II (Emperor Maximilian II
Erzherzog Ferdinand II (Archduke Ferdinand II
They are excellent representations of suits of armour on display in the Kunsthistorischen Museum in Vienna.
Cheers

Thanks, Derek! If there are six, then they might not be the Aurora knights, Aurora issue five, with a sixth made as a master but never issued. Does the Imai series include a mounted figure? One of the Aurora knights was mounted. They were also based on actual suits of armor in collections, but I don't think they were all in the Viennese collection. I'm checking my reference material to track this down, starting with Thomas Graham's "Aurora Model Kits".

When Aurora went out of business, Monogram bought much of their stock of molds, including the knights, to prevent anyone else from bringing them on the market. When Revell and Monogram merged, the knights made it into the newly combined catalog and have been in and out of production at times. Also, Aurora had licensing arrangements with other companies to rebox their models. So it's possible that these could be the Aurora kits.

I'm going to continue to track this info down, I'm curious now.

Prost!

A followup--I think I confused myself with the scale. The Aurora kits were 12", not 1/12 scale. Sorry for confusing the question.

Prost!

The attached compilations are the result of a few months of research into a subject near and dear to my heart: the Aurora Knights were my first forays into the world of historical miniatures some 50 years ago! Hopefully, they will be of some use.

By way of post-script, the Aurora Knights have now been reissued by Monogram. To date, they have released the Red, Black, and [mounted] Gold. I should note that the re-releases have been [thankfully!} molded in light grey. I inquired if there were plans to release the Blue and the Silver, but the response was not very encouraging.

Regarding the Imai Knights, these were released in late 1984, if memory serves. I know I harassed a poor distributor at the IPMS Nationals in Atlanta until he finally agreed to sell me his samples! I've recently discovered they were subsequently released in plated versions some time in the '90s, but I was unaware of these variations at the time. But I digress. . .

Given what these are, they are simply superb! OOB, they are excellent representative models of the harnesses in question, all of which I have researched to varying extents in person. If one is so inclined, one can indulge in a bit of super-detailing, and create a 1/12th scale masterpiece!

Hope this helps!
