No young 'uns this trip Paul. All grown up with families of their own.
I'm still trying to confirm whether or not the Histoire et Collections or Armes et Collections book shop is open as a brick and mortar store at 19 Avenue de la Republique. Anybody know?
All the best,
Dan

Checked on Histoire et Collections on Saturday. Found their location easily enough, but they were closed. Seems unlikely to me that if they operated a book shop out of that location that they'd be closed for retail sales on a Saturday. My best guess is that they no longer have a brick and mortar book shop and that the office on Republique runs their online retail and wholesale sales. I might return to the shop on a week day and verify because I'd really like the opportunity to thumb through some of the publications before buying.

All the best,
Dan

Happy to report that Le Poilu has been found! My wife and I spent an enjoyable 90 minutes bothering Patrick and his assistant. Patrick was very generous and allowed me to photograph numerous French and British WW1 items I'd never even seen in museums including the Musee Armee this trip. It's amazing how much it helps to hold the item of clothing or holster or weapon, etc. in your hands and take some photos from various angles.

Example - I've been working on a 1/16th scale British sun helmet entirely from photos and some measurements provided from an online site. Patrick has three!! If you get a chance, drop in to his shop on Rue Emile Duclaux.

After I'm back in the US and have had time to clean up the photos, I'll post them as well as some from the Musee Armee and the battle fields.

All the best,

Dan

Also worth the trip is the Musee de la Grande Guerre in Meaux - the furthest line of German infantry advance in 1914, according to our tour guide, Bertrand. I highly recommend him and Nicola, the Brit Liverpudlian grad student & guide, working for Paris Trip.

We went to Belleau Wood and then to the museum. The museum has a large collection of uniforms, equipment and weapons! It rivaled Musee Aimee, in my opinion. 300 photos I took!

All the best,

Dan

Dan,

Take a day and zip up to Brussels for a visit to the Royal Army Museum, which has simply, a marvelous collection of WW1 artifacts. Paris to Brussels is only a little over an hour by train, and from the Gare du Midi station in central Brussels, the museum is only a few subway stops away. The museum has several WW1 tanks (marvel at the paper thin armor!) and artillery pieces, and a seemingly endless supply of uniforms behind glass. The real gem of the museum (in a literal sense) is the room with the Imperial Russian jewels, wear your sunglasses! Been there several times myself in the past, and will be revisiting in December when I too go to France and Belgium for my own WW1 self guided tour. We should compare notes!

I guess you make profit by visiting the Musée du Cinquantenaire ( 100 feet from the Army Museum ) Prehistory, Gallo-Roman, Mérovingiens; and the part on Egypt,Greece, Iran, Rome and Etrusq .. also ... etc ... etc ...
An 50 feet away the autoworld with a collection of old Belgian cars
And the Art Nouveau house in the park

Allas, a bit late for the Ommegang event on the Grand Place

Once again for all visiting Brussels avoid the shops named "Brussels Chocolate" arround the Grand Place, it's Chinese production for some . Sure values : Godiva, Leonidas, Neuhaus, Galler
http://www.ommegang.be/

Avoid also all restaurant in Rue de Bouchers, Petite rue des Bouchers and rue du Marché aux Fromages ( all near the Grand Place ) 99% are tourists trap

Resting indeed! Hrumph!

Hard and difficult work consuming escargot and muscles in cream sauce. Uh... no... NOT IN THE SAME meal!

Tonight... Chez Fernando. Hey, somebody has to keep these hard-working Parisian chefs and wait staff employed!

Seriously everybody says American tourism is way down this season and their businesses are hurting. Tour guides, restaurateurs, hoteliers... I've heard this from many.

Good bargains to be had. :p

All the best,

Dan
