Hi Mark I apologise for being a bit slow in the uptake, just put it down to old age.I spent 10 years in OZ in the RAAF and my daughter was born in Wagga Wagga so you think I would have known when I was being sent up.I'm usually quick of the mark but must have just had a senior moment !!!!

........ still you will always have Australia and sheep ;)

This thread has opened a big can of worms and I dont see any way to put them back in the can.
Its a hobby, its meant to be fun so why cheat? I do know that some people do cheat but others use the same ideas without cheating as perhaps they cant do (paint) the same item to the same standard. If its not for a comp. and you use a decal are you cheeting, I think not!
Now if you want to talk about Judge cheeting, check sunday morning results at Euro. Get a lot better last year but we will see what the weekend brings!

Meanwhile, just outside Woolongong in the corner of a lonely sheepstation, sits an old Austra...........

So decals are cheating in some way? The recent tanker bust from Special Ops Models include decals for the chevrons and unit patch. Take it back a notch...Young's Flying Tiger pilot has embossed tiger and unit patches and blood chit. Take it another step and ask if having box art as a guide, or heaven forbid, a color guide and instruction sheet is also somehow cheating.

Sounds like the Lamentations of the Olde Aeroplane Modeler. "In my day, we took a block of balsa and carved away everything that didn't look like a P-51 and we were better for it! Builders these days with their plastic kits ain't modelers: WE were modelers."

Now, as far as eye decals go, the ones I've seen have looked to me like the eyes on a cheap doll and in the fields we see at figure shows, thy'd be a liabilty for thie appearance.

I think the can of worms was opened when the thread was posted :)) but it was going to be.
But it has started a good debate and so far all pretty lighthearted and down to personal opinion, which is great.

I saw the initial post as a question to cheating in figure (paint), so my comments on decals used etc refered to that.
Maybe I am a traditionalist, although not too old, and the enjoyment for me is painting the piece and trying to push my personal boundaries with a brush even if the result would be better with decals etc, but that is only my way.

The debate of passing off in competitions and guidelines is fair a whole field on its own.
At the end of the day and as said, use whatever you feel like using to get the result and/or the enjoyment you want from the piece either during or as a finished piece, and if you answer honestly when asked how you did a particular part, that is a bonus :)

All the best
