Well guys, I ordered 2 Young's busts; the Templar knight in Jerusalem and Blackbeard the pirate. As they will take awhile to get here, I bought a Lord of the Rings plastic set, the Riders of Rohan just to try my hand at it. Not sure how those tiny plastic guys compare with a 54mm metal model, but I learned a lot about layers, shading etc. They are so small I had to work with a magnifying light, which I found difficult, but it wasn't too bad for a first try.
I can see lots of mistakes, but at least it wasn't a really expensive lesson. I'm hoping to find the busts easier and will keep you posted on how I progress.

Thank you for all the great posts and subject matter here; it's a wealth of information for us newbies :)

Hello Mary

Well doing it is the only way to learn and progress and seeing your own mistakes too. You will enjoy the young busts; they are a real pleasure to work with and a real joy to paint.

I have been painting for 30 years now and still make mistakes with most pieces that I paint. It’s good to have the eyes and views of others on this forum and at the shows; it’s another step and help in progression of painting.
I look forward to seeing some of your work on here soon and you will get all the help and advice that you need from the members of this forum, that’s for sure.;)

Cheers
Tommi

Thanks Keith and Tommi
I've seen both of you boys' work and hope I live long enough to paint that well!
If I get stuck I'll let you know, and if I can take a decent photo of the little riders I'll post it.

Hi Mary,
I have to agree with the other guys jump in with both feet, paste pics on here often and soak up as much of the feedback as you can it has improved my painting heaps. And don't be afraid to ask for help or advice everyone here is always willing to help where they can.
Looking forward to seeing your work.(y)

Hope you enjoy painting the busts, they'll make great larger canvases to practice on.

Roughly half the size, depending on the 54 (quite a few '54mm' figures are more than 60mm tall).

I can see lots of mistakes, but at least it wasn't a really expensive lesson.
Maybe too early to focus on it but stripping paint and primer off is very doable, even on plastics, if you want to repaint any of your practice pieces down the line. With a bit of luck and the right products you can get back to a pristine casting :)
