Having served two missions abroad I am not surprised about the outcome. Responsible leaders of the nations in charge lacked the will and sense to accept the reality on the ground right from the start. Too sad for the wasted efforts, our casualties and the people struggling for survival. There is a road from Kabul 1841, to Kabul 1881, to Kabul 1979 and to Kabul today...
How many Western nations have wasted time, treasure and most importantly lives over two centuries trying to sort that mess of a country out? Maybe the Taliban is the answer? I live on the circuit for RAF Brize Norton. There was a lot incoming overnight and busy today too. A Voyager going over as I type this.

We should never have gone into Afghanistan. Once again America forgot to learn from history and had to learn the hard way. Lives and Treasure lost due to hubris. A lot of good men lost life and limb there. For naught.

... everywhere our governments, those "ladies & gentlemen in the high castle", have sent us we left tiny glimpses of unfounded hope, but more than anything else very long trails of tears !
...everywhere we left chaos and misery for the local people, while our dishonorable politicians and their cronies basked in the conceit of their 'humanitarian' decisions!
Words fail to express my anger and sadness.

I totally agree Pierre. The other thing that balls me off is that, in places like this, as soon as the shit hits the fan, the "ex-pats" who have been doing very nicely thankyou, are always first in the queue to get their precious arses out. And it's the poor bloody military that have to put themselves on the line to save them. Angry? Me? Not much!!

At the beginning of this Mission responsibilities between nations were split up. Germany was tasked to build up the Police Force - the staff for this task comprised initially less than ten officers....not to speak of Great Britain's task to combat drug trafficking with a similar sized force of personnell. One of the best jokes was the handover of a palette laden with personal computers by a high ranking German Police Officer at Kabul in 2006 - shown at the offical webpage of the German Police Headquarters for missions abroad. In the Field Police Stations of Afghanistan these computers could not be connected to a power line and there was no network at all....the picture therefore dissappeared after a while but no lessons were learned by the higher ups. I remember in 2007 an arrogant briefing by a representative of our ministry of interior about "train the trainer" as the smart German concept to accomplish the mission. The same goes for many NGO's and politicians of course - always with their head in the clouds. This mission was lost right from the start due to no interest or knowledge about the real situation and the turning of a blind eye to the devastating level of corruption throughout the local government and the privileged families. Could go on but it is useless. Keep my fingers crossed that this final extraction will not end up in another desaster.

What has happened there now corresponds exactly to the situation 20 years ago, before the first western troops arrived.
There are only three differences: since then, an additional 40,000 people have died, including 59 members of the German Bundeswehr, the Taliban are now armed with modern weapons like a medium-sized NATO state, such as Belgium, (all delivered free from the US for the Afghan "army" that collapsed within hours!) and the German taxpayer had to shell out 47 billion euros for this adventure ...
Anyone who is able not only to read history books, but also to understand them, should have known that Afghanistan is quite rightly nicknamed the "graveyard of empires".
But we have the stupidest government in the world!

How many times is that we in the UK have been involved in this shithole of a country.Will the numties in Westminster never learn have any of them ever looked at a history book..All we have ever got is dead and maimed soldiers.
