With eager anticipation I opened the kit from The Lost Battalion last week to see a kit sculpted by John Long. After seeing the Master and posting a sneak preview for the Atlanta Show Release I layed out the parts and began an examination.

The Kit comprised of 13 parts including a piece of wire for the powder horn strap. The lower body was cleanly cast with minimal seam / mold lines. I took the figure to my garage where I do all my clean-ups and set the stop watch and 17 minutes later had the figure ready for washing with mild detergent before returning to the paint desk to begin priming and the flesh painting.

The kit has come with two right arms which dry-fitted perfectly to the lug in the upper body. The upper body and head were abound with detail right down to the beadwork on the pouch strap and the feathers on the back of the head.

The kit comes with a resin base with slots for the feet to fit with the left knee resting on a log sculpted right into the base. The base has rocks and weeds also sculpted into the base and after the side mold plug was easily removed was spray primed with Floquil R-( primer.

Here is a sneak preview of the sbs that I will post after the release date in Atlanta.

Any fan of the Native American would really enjoy painting John's Stockbridge Mohican and also pair it with the 120mm Roger's Ranger that he has already done for The Lost Battalion...........hmmmm........not a bad idea. What do you all think of the Vignette idea. Here is the Roger's ranger John also did for The Lost Battalion.

It's cool to see something of mine painted by someone else. That's looking good Guy. It looks like your enjoying it. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Your post reminds me to send Darla an updated picture of the Ranger. The paint was still a tad wet when I took that one. A vignette is what I had in mind when I did the Stockbridge. Maybe someone will do one.

Hey Guy,

I think your Mohican looks great. I love the color choice for the tunic it gives a different look from the classic white. Can't wait to see it all together.

Thanks Brandy and Herb for the compliments.

Herb - The flesh is done with tube oils over a base of 2 coats of Humbrol #121. Next a mix of 3 colors, 20% Burnt Sienna, 40% yellow ochre and 40% raw umber. This is applied over the Humbrol base coat and then right away while wet, using a flat soft brush (several clean brushes are needed) take off the wet base mix letting the Humbrol base coat show through. Next I apply Cadium yellow to the areas where the Humbrol shows through and let it set for an hour. I then use a clean brush to blend this into the flesh areas. Next I take Titanium white and apply to the same areas I applied the Yellow and let it set for an hour. After an hour I carefully blend this into the flesh areas for highlights. The final step is to take a dot of red to the lower lip and blend and a dot of red to the center of each cheek and blend out over the cheek area. (use red very very sparingly). I let the figure sit under a 60watt bulb overnight and proceed with the figure. This technique is right out of the Verlinden Book from the late 80"s , early 90"s and has worked well for me with native Americans and any outdoor type figure.
