Thank you Nap !

I applied some more paint onto the helmet, I think it's an improvement but I leave that to you.

Hi there Guy that's lovely work with the oils, you should be pleased with those results, you have the making of a nice finished bust on you workbench, what brand do you use, I cant find a brand that I am happy with as I seem to get grainy pigments in a lot of the Windsor Newton colours that wont give a nice smooth result when trying to blend in the shadows and highlights in fact does anyone else get this problem, the worst offenders are the Vandyke brown, Burnt and Raw Umber type shades.
Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing him completed as I have one in my grey army lol.

Hi there Terry, thanks for your kind reply sir. I paint with Talens Rembrandt oils, this is Talens' finest range. I have Talens Van Gogh tubes too, this is Talens' study paint, in general they work well too. I'm sure that room temperature is important. I experience difficulties when I'm painting in a cold room. In the warm living room I get the best results. You can also store your paint in a warm environment, maybe this helps ?
You could be right on the grainy pigments, I had this problem in the past too, at that time I had Winton oils.
I'm looking forward to other members' reactions...

Thank you for the fast reply, I had been looking at the Rembrandt range because many of the good figure painters seem to use them, but the only place that I can get them is from Amazon as none of our local Art shops stock anything other than W&N or Reeves so I sort of put of buying them but I will have another look at getting a couple of the browns into my paint box.
Looking forward to seeing the way you treat the cloth garments on the bust using oils.

Hi Guy,

If you want to replicate the actor Orlando Bloom who plays Balian of Ebelin in "Kingdon of Heaven" on which this bust is based, I'd recommend you change the colour of the tunic from red and white to a burgundy and buff/ crème colour. It's not a criticism of what you've done so far, I just wanted to alert you to another option if you wanted it.

Hi Guy your progress is looking good with the fine shading on the white, the red can prove to be tricky trying to get the contrast right and end up with a suitable shade that your happy with but you seem to have the talent going on what you have posted to date so crack on and bring him to life.
I always try to tone the colours down so that they are not to bright and the weathering stage can help if you can bring yourself to adding blood and dirt (not over doing it) to what is usually a nice neat paint job lol.

Hi Tony, thank you for the heads up my friend. You're 100% right about the tunic, I reworked it today and it's not done of course but it looks better now I think. I've also tried to create the heavy fabric of the textile with my oils.

Hi Terry, the reds will be a challenge but I look forward to give them a try. Thanks for your kind reply and the tips, I'll keep them in mind.

Best regards, thanks for your visit.
Guy

Terry, I've just arrived here at PF and the advice and tips I've already got is priceless ! This forum was exactly what I was looking for. And I'm glad we have many oil painting artists here, most people use acrylics I think.

Guy I have only been a member for several months myself and it was an ebay seller that I had bought a Bust from recommended that I check it out, so I did and not only has it helped me with all types of techniques and where to get stuff but it gives me the motivation to plough on and complete my figures. You will see all different levels of skill and you can notice how beginners get better with each figure because they are picking things up from the PF forums and setting themselves a level to aim at based on other painters work. When I first started painting figures over 40 years ago this was a lonely hobby but with the coming back into the hobby about a year ago and seeing the difference that the internet has made its a completely different and a much more enjoyable past time, so crack on and get that in the cabinet and what are going to work on next?
