Hello Friends,

here comes a update of the Landsknechts bust - still in progress.

Here are the words of the painter, my firend Jürgen Nirschl.

I hope you like it,
Markus

Hi folks,

painting the face was followed by painting the hat strap, the neck, the shirt and the first yellow basics for the jacket.

Especially the shirt was a great challenge, because of the lots of little folds. First I wanted to paint the shirt in white, like it is showed at the boxart. But than I have choosen a duty greyish color, wich allowed to play a little bit more with the highlights and the shaddows.

I keep you updated.

Best regards,
Jürgen

I agree with my friend Jay, fantastic work so far, the face is realistically painted.
Can you share with us your formula for the flesh color.

Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next step.

Cheers
Roc. :)

Hi

I have just bought this bust, I am very impressed, Your painting of it is great, very good flesh tones and shading on the shirts. Brilliant.........

I was just wondering about the green undershirt, showing through the slits in the yellow over shirt, I know you have followed the box art in the most part, but would this not be showing as white/light grey, the same as the gathered collar above the top of the yellow garment, I thought this looked a little odd, would they have a different coloured garment between the inner and outter garments. I am not trying to detract from your painting of this bust, just an observation.

Maybe I need to learn a little more about Landsknechts......

Dave,
Possibly the lining of the doublet. Embleton has photos and illustrations (reference "Medieval Military Costume") also period manuscript (reference "Maximillians Triumph") showing the doublet lined and peeking through the slashes. Quite few of the contemporary paintings by Urs Graf (reference "Art of warfare in the Renaissance") show similar garments. While much of these are usually white linen, the Swiss and German landsknechts were the "pimps" of their time period and the more garish and colorful the better.

There are several great illustrations in the Lucerne Chronicle that show some of the Swiss and German Landsknechts but they seem to go the other way and are not using the "puff and slash" of some of their contemporaries.

Dave,
I have read that they took the regular clothing and cut slits in it and then inserted and attached extra material so that it was looser for fighting and swordplay. So it would seem that any color could be appropriate. Perhaps according to the material available.
