Obviously, age makes a difference throughout this thread here....a bunch of mostly meaningless songs (to me). I haven't bought any new music in years for that reason. When you're as old as I am (dirt). You tend to stick with what you're familiar with. I have a serious collection of vinyl and a sound system that still kicks ass. And though I still like a bit of hard rock; my taste still goes for songs that have some life meaning like David Gilmore/Pink Floyd and Ambrosia among many others and not just noise. To each his own.

I suggest you check lyrics before condemning other people’s taste as noise and no life meaning. E.g. Train kept a rolling is a cover the three bands made of a Jonny Burnette song from the 1950s about falling in love with a girl on a train, Nightrain is about drugs. These are real life things just as David Gilmore’s wall tour had a protesting theme against war and big government and social injustice - he made millions out of it ironically but it was an excellent concert.

I don't think this thread was meant to "trip anyone's musical tastes" and is really nothing other than just a bit of fun.
The suggestions posted cover quite a wide range of music genre's. People are inevitably going to like some of them - and also pass on some of them.
It's what makes us all individuals with our own personal preferences and tastes. Which I believe is all rather....
And talking of "Taste"....

If I got it right, the thread is about music where trains and railways are the main theme (please correct me if I'm wrong) .

Among my favorite bands, groups, singers (and of course at my age I'm a fan of the old 60's type of music, mainly rock but also pop, folk, etc), I can't remember of those many songs where there's a mention to trains and railways.

This one, by a group I used to hear a lot in the old days, Crosby, Stills and Nash (Neil Young was not yet part of the band by then, if memory is right) is one of the very few I remember about this theme.

Rest assure age and music have little to do with one another. 62 next months and all the "music of my youth" went out the backdoor years ago. ( Sorry, Dolf...no "at my age at 60...." there's no 'of course' there) There's so many new and energetic bands these days so why go to concerts with artists that were already old when I was young..or listen to the same record for the 1.000.000 time, eyes filled with tears while memories of days long gone kill today's fun )
Try out Airbourne, Shinedown, Dragonforce, State Champs and ( saw them last week again IN Zwolle ) Black Stone Cherry.
Now, as for the topic about trains...


Wanna know how much fun we had in Zwolle with BSC...

By "the old 60's" I was mentioning the music from that time period, that decade.
I guess the main reasons are because back then I would listen to most music produced in those days (which I admit I haven't done for quite a few years, at least since the early 80's ), so I was aware of every new single and album out in the market.
My favorite group ever (back then, now, and forever ) is "The Doors" (with Jim Morrison, not that stuff the remaining members have been doing occasionally since Jim is gone) . As Jim passed in 1971, the legacy is what it is, 6 albums + 1 double album Live (in concert) .

But there's a bunch of other great performers from that same time period, who IMHO (and for my musical taste) have created the best rock music ever. I've listened to some more recent bands, on occasion, but... everything they do was already done by those guys & girls in the 60's.

I didn't know BSC. Not bad, I admit. But IMHO that's not new... Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, others (I do love hard rock, heavy metal; in the 70's, early 80's I enjoyed Saxon, Thin Lizzy, even ACDC, quite a lot), have already created this type of music some ... 50-60 years ago

Lol... I have to admit that there may be albums I may have listened all those many times but no "eyes filled with tears" because of that Nan... rather for fun, or to get me in a good/better mood, on occasion while I'm doing some painting on some figure more recently

I do have friends, my age, that have kept informed and up to date, with the music, bands, etc, that have been around after I stopped following the news, but they don't live here, so I don't get updated on the new trends as before. I've had so many other interests and hobbies since those days, music is not one of them I guess, so when I feel the need to listen to some music, I just play a CD/DVD of some of those old pioneers from the 60's that I may still have (recently for instance, during some 2 weeks where I had no computer, hence no Internet, I played again & again that old double album from the film "Forrest Gump", simply because there's a large variety of those old songs I enjoyed back then, and still do to this day; but "no tears" man, rather joy and good vibes instead ) .

Edit: I didn't know none of the bands you mention, so had to check them on YT.
One thing is for sure, you're a hard rock fan (which I also am, as previously stated, but also like other types of music ) .
Picked one song from each of the groups you list. They are good, can't deny that. It's a kind of music I still like & enjoy.
But... they didn't create/invent nothing new, they replay what others have created... in the 60's & 70's... "Runnin'Wild" from Airbourne for instance... it's ACDC! Same for the others, it has been created by the pioneers from the "good old days" and played again & again by many others...

Hai Dolf, point taken. To listen to music might be great but nothing beats live concerts. Now, rock (like blues, soul, country,folk, classic etc.etc.) is a 'style' When bands play that style they tend to sound a bit alike. That's why it's called a style. The great thing is that there are new bands, still playing that style while they write new songs. Wow, so one can stick to his style without having to listen to the same 50-year old songs.

In 1973 Martin Cooper invented the first portable phone. Do you still have that one since all others are just a copy of 'what's done before' or ......

I've seen a lot of these old rockbands in the last few years, like Deep Purple, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake, Sabaton, Eagles etc.etc. and, sorry to say so, the music is still great but nothing happens on stage, even with Kiss, same old trick over-and-over. An 80-year old hip-swaying Mick Jagger can't convince me anymore . Just don't believe it that 'once started up, he never stops.....'knowing nowaday's it's the defibrilator that starts him up. .

That's why I love these now, fresh, energetic, bands. It's still rock, it's done before but it's darn refreshing !!
Sure, Greata van Fleet sounds like Led Zeppelin but WOW, try doing that when you're just 21....

But let's return to the topic !!!

One thing is for sure (IMO, and for my taste, obviously) you do have a very good taste as far as music is concerned!

Again, didn't know Greta Van Fleet, listened to the song on the video, and it's great music indeed (even if even the voice sounds familiar... as if Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin was alive again... )


Cool list of songs talking about trains on that link! How could I have forgotten about "Peace Train", by Cat Stevens, "Long Train Runnin", by the Doobie Brothers, or "Train in Vain", by The Clash?... All of them songs, and performers, I love and have listened to a zillion times... Like the hands and eyes, memory too is no longer what it used to be I guess...


Btw, not necessarily related to the "trains & railways" main topic, but because you're Dutch.

You obviously knew the work of Rutger Hauer, the Dutch actor who passed away at the age of 75 a couple of days ago. An actor I've always loved and admired, having watched quite a few of the movies he played in.

Doesn't matter that he was now 75, or that "Blade Runner" dates from 1982. The man became immortal, if for nothing else, for sure with that final scene from "Blade Runner":



Out of curiosity, Roy Batty, the replicant he plays on that great film, dies in 2019 (funny how they imagined the then future would be like in 2019, the year that dystopia is supposed to be...), and Rutger Hauer, the man, is gone in... 2019


Another film where he played the main character, that is also among my favorites, is "The Hitcher" (from 1986). Don't know if that was officially recognized, but I've always felt that the inspiration for the story was based on a song by my favorite singer ever, Jim Morrison (his last recorded song, from the last album by "The Doors", LA Woman, called "Riders on the Storm") :
