I paint my figures by approximating a skin tone with acyrlics then "glaze" with oils. I am wondering what do you suggest, and rationale, do you paint with a darker layer of oils than the base , lighter or similar?

Dear Talino,

I only paint with acrylic. My base coat is always of medium shade. Once dried, I will apply darker shade for shadow and creases and lighter tone for highlighting. All are done using the glazing technique.

Talino,

I paint in oils and this is just a personal preference but I generally undercoat in a lighter shade and for the very darkest points (behind the nostrils, under the eyebrows) I usually "block in" a darker color during the undercoat. The reason I do this is because I found it easier to make an area darker with oils, but more difficult to get a good highlight when using a darker basecoat. The blocking of dark areas backs up the darkest shadows so you don't have to use as much paint.

I always like my undercoats to be similar to my oil base color. If it is too dark it is hard to cover, too light and the oils show streaks. Just the way I do it.
