This is the mix I used on my Roman signifer's lion pelt (my first post on PF). Thought I'd add it here for easy reference:

Base tone is a mixture of yellow ochre and burnt umber, mixed with white until it is the right (lion) tone. Main point is to get the yellow tone out of the yellow ochre.

Shading: base mix with additional burnt umber

Lighting: base mix plus white.

After drying add some white to selected edges to suggest the whiter coat parts.

Dark hairs are burnt umber and Van Dyke Brown, slightly highlighted with burnt sienna and some extreme shadows added in lamp black.

Slight brush marks help to get the impression of pelt.

Hi Adrian

All sounds good. Have you any painted examples that you have done yourself, would be interesting to relate you tutorial to a finished piece.

Cheers
Tommi

Thanks for posting this, a friend of mine is just in the proces of painting this and at our club last wednesday was asking my advice on painting the Lion pelt-I've just printed this off-so thanks again and perfect timing.
