Any chance of seeing the completed work in the flesh at a local show here in Ont.?
Brian

Brian - Are there shows in Ontario anymore? I was looking at OMSS's new website and it looks promising but no newsletter posted in June or Sept 2011 makes me a little worried its all show. Can you recommend any good shows - I'm totally out of touch.
Colin

Hey Fellas,

I'd like to know more about these clubs as well and whom to contact for OMSS and even MMSS (Manitoba Model Soldier Society) I would like to get their info plugged into the Club and Shows forum categories :)

Any help would be great even if an email to one of the club's officers!
Cheers,
gordy

Hi Colin,

It is good to see that you`re back in the saddle again - 5 years is a bit of a "break" - kind of like Brian Wilson :)

Ontario doesn't really have any figure-focussed shows like Chicago or MFCA (I've been to Chicago once - Wow!) and I haven't been to an OMSS show in years (although the scuttlebutt is that the new management is trying to steer it away from the toy soldier collection end towards more connoisseur figures - again, time will tell). However, other local IPMS-type model shows have figure categories that generally attract at least a few really talented figure painters - not to name drop, but talents such as Paul Kernan, Greg MacEvoy, Alex McCutcheon, Paul Kelly, Joe Videcki, John Guaurke etc. have all come to the WELL*CO*ME shows put on in Guelph in March by the Guelph Plasic Modelers Group (my home club). There's also the AJAX show coming up at the end of October (go to http://www.ipmstoronto.com/Ajax31.jpg for details), and the Toronto IPMS puts on the TorCan show annually.

So, the scene is still alive here, all within an hour of Oakville. Let me know if you want more details and I'll pass ' em along.

Cheers,

Brian

Gordy,

Don't know if this helps, but here's the OMSS contact e-mail from their website: http://www.omss.ca/pages/contact.html

Cheers,

OMSS was one of THE figure shows in its day but unfortunately since the late 80's, it has essentially become not much more than a toy soldier collectors show. I know there have several attemps over the years to attract miniaturists back but never really materialised and the show remains a shadow of its former self.

It's too bad because as Brian said (and as you can see, he's no slouch himself) there are a number of us figgie types around here that tend to practice our dark arts in isolation;)

On a side note....if anyone wants to read a story of absolute evil and political duplicity pick up "Shake Hands with the Devil", General Dallaire's account of his experiences as NATO commander during the Rwanadan massacres.

And again, great work Colin(y)

Yes I recall OMSS when it showed annually at Casa Loma in the conservatory. Many US modellers came up for that event each year. Great days. Based on their on line newsletters they still have really good speakers at monthly meetings. I also hear that they are recruiting alumni to return. I may check them out this winter when I have a spare Sunday but I think my days of NEEDING a club are over.

I have little experience of IPMS shows Brian. I did attend a Torcan many moons ago. Thanks for the link - will check it out.

Paul - you are right to recommend Dallaire's book. In the book and in various interviews I have seen he takes no prisoners. When you condemn your own failings freely, I guess you are able to speak plainly about specific Western powers and individuals. Dallaire doe not hesitate to point fingers and name names, but he always saves the greatest criticism for himself. If your really want to be depressed and have you eyes opened about how the UN Security Council totally screwed Rwanda, check out PBS' doc "Ghosts of Rwanda." Its on you tube.
