Looking awsome

Hi Tony, mate this is looking awsome, really coming together well, cant wait to see the finished product. What kind of base are you planning for this?
Cheers Mate, Andrew

Great progress Tony! I like the feathercloth very much.
Looking forward to see him finished.

Marcel.

Good grief Tony - when I looked at some of the photos I thought they were a real persons you were using as refernece - truly outstanding. Use some of th Japanese paper grasses for the base - they'd be ideal. Cheers mate really fantastic work

A super job, Tony!

I appreciate the fact that you've treated the moko with all the respect it deserves as more often than not, miniature painters see it as a mere decoration and a pretext to express their fancy.

It's nice to see that there are still modellers who care about the accuracy aspect of our hobby.

Congrats,
Quang

Hi Stephen, thanks mate I'm really glad you like him. I agree with your suggestion about paper plants. Must get some more soon.

Hi Quang, thank you for your generous comments. As you know I try hard to ensure my figures are as historically accurate as possible, and in the case of the Maori I wanted to ensure the te moko was accurate and pay respect to the indigenous culture of my Kiwi brothers. I really enjoy the research phase and building up my knowledge as it deepens my understanding of other cultures and periods of history.

Hi guys,

Nearing completion now.

Still more work to be done with blending skin tones and minor touch ups here and there.

I've added feathers to the head of the taiaha (spear) and done some more highlighting on the feather cloak.

Painting finished

Final touches to painting now complete.

I've coated the skin with a mix of Burnt Sienna and Naples Yellow and then brushed off the excess to reveal the acrylics underneath. This allows the oils to tint the skin tone without obscuring the base coats, and creates a sense of depth to the skin colour. Next step is to do the groundwork.

Superb work Tony, Callum will be proud to see his creation finished so well.

Hardy

Thank you Stephen and Hardy,

This has been one of the most challenging figures I've ever attempted to paint and I have to say the results are very pleasing. Callum's superb sculpting really challenged my skill as a painter.

Hi Tony, Nice work with the Maori. I've been looking at this kit for a while now, might just have to pick one up. You have done a great job on him. I love the traditional costume he is wearing, nice one. A big Punga (tree fern) behind him would look great.
Ben

Great result, Tony.
I like everything you've done with this figure except the hair.
Don't like the white streaks.
Beautiful painting.Well done.

Very nice
the wash with the oil paint brings really brings the skin to life.
the tree fern would really be a place setter.
Martin.

Hi Mark & Martin,

Thanks guys, it's great to get such positive feedback.

Mark, the highlights in the hair have been accentuated by the lighting I used to take the photo. I painted the hair black and used Black/ Grey to highlight it. In the flesh the highlights don't look so stark.
