Hi Steve - Thanks mate, more to come.

Hi Keith - Thanks for the continued support mate, I'm in the constructive zone so the brushes will need to wait for a little while.

Hi Del - Thanks for the nice comments mate. I really like to convert figures as I end up with a unique piece, sort of makes up for my painting.

Hi Mark - Thanks for looking mate, I would normally use milliput for braid but decided to persevere with the wire as I could get the loops more uniform by wrapping the wire round the end of a scribe.

Hi Ron - Thanks for jumping in mate, don't worry I have another 3 immediately lined up to convert. I'm enjoying pushing a bit of putty and wire around.

cheers
Richie

Hi Gerald - Thanks for looking in mate, glad you like my efforts.

Hi Steve - Thanks for thumbs mate, this era is my passion and has loads of scope, I agree the whole Victorian era and all it's conflicts has huge potential.

cheers
Richie

Richie have been reading through a few of your conversions and have to ask. Do you now look at a figure just for a conversion or do you see a figure and know you can work on it?
Wonder where you get your ideas, if they just come to you or do you set out to convert something?
Great stuff.

Don

Hi Don,
I suppose I start with noting down ideas for characters or regiments/units from reading about them. If I can find a suitable pose, that may be good enough. Sometimes I see a figure such as Steve's (Valiant) Boer war drummer boy and just knew I wanted to convert him into a drummer boy from the Zulu war. I have decided just to stick to this period as the Zulu war is my personal passion. I have also decided to specialise in this area for the sake of my own sanity and wallet if nothing else. With such an array of figures on the market I could go mad and end up with a warehouse like Tommi and a few others.
Again sometimes I see a figure and know I could work on it. Most of the inspiration comes from reading and research, sometimes like the drummer boy it's a eureka moment. I must have 50 to 60 projects noted down and some others just keep jumping in, some probably will never be built like Saving The Guns - Isandlwana in 1/16 scale, as I can't get a six horse team, gun and limber in my display cabinets, I can only get a team of four horses so would not look right. But who knows.

I also suppose that seeing such fantastic painting and variations of painting styles on stock figures and know I could never emmulate that in painting, I look for a different angle, something unique and know it may not be the most fantastically painted figure, but it's the only one in the world and something I love.

Does this make sense Don or is it as clear as mud! I don't think I have a set pattern.
cheers
Richie
P.S. thanks for looking in mate and taking the time to comment.

Makes a lot of sense Richie and I do admire and envy your talent. Its the thought process that gets to me, what figure I see and just what I can do with it. You must be like a dog with two tails at a second hand figure table!

Don

Hi All,
I have decided to pick this one up again after completing my latest two projects. I have put a base coat on the face in acrylics and then added the first layer of oils, I have blocked in the sheepskin with acrylics and started to wash the coat in various shades of oils. Hopefully will get some more done tomorrow after the brushes dry out.
cheers

The original sculpting on the Roll Call figure shows its age doesn't it?! Very much of its ('90s) time.

That said however, you've done a fantastic conversion job on this and I can't wait to see it finished. Great work!!

Hi All,
I managed to get a bit more work done on this, the jacket and trousers have been blocked in and the boots are near completion. I would like to know if anyone can help with a mix of acrylic colours to create a warmer red soil dust. For a normal dusty look I use a flat brown and buff colour mixed together.
cheers

Hi Richie,
He's looking really well Mate. The boots and sheepskin are very nicely done, I like them a lot.
You must must be truely satisfied with this little gem of a conversion?
All the best till the next installment,
Keith

Hi Keith,
Cheers mate.
Hi All
A small update, still loads to do on the sheepskin yet although I have put a bit more work in and modified the fur to the final colour I want. I have also been working on the trousers, belt and patrol jacket and I think the boots are just about done.
cheers
Richie

He looks fine Richie, Well done.
I agree, maybe put some more shadows to add definition to the face and beard as it is under a wide brim hat.
Great job Mate, I really like your last couple of pieces.
All the very best,
Keith

Looks great Richie
You've done it again with this conversion. Great sculpting and paint and a very informative SBS that gave me some helpful ideas.

Look forward to the next one

Colin

Lovely finish to this one Richie, looks like you are back in the driving seat with the figures mate.

All the best
Steve
