I'm gobsmacked, Colin, and I've seen quite a few of your sculpts now; this is your best yet. The precision of the embroidery and medal detail is stunning and you've captured the personality of Lannes beautifully. I am in awe...

Look forward to seeing it in the flesh!

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Brian. I am pretty happy with him. And a new putty pushing record for me....zero to done in six days. About 30 hours all in.

Beautiful sculpt of this bust Colin. Too bad it won't be available as a commercial figure or can we hope to the contrary?

Sorry to disappoint. My style does not really suit itself to commercial pattern making. I don't think the hair, bicorne and feathers, or collar could be cast. Also, my preferred scale of 1/6, would likely not appeal to the majority of bust painters who like 1/9 or 1/10. Appreciate the compliment though.

Amazing talent, Mr. Fraser! Agree. This is your best yet. Those details are fantastic!(y)
Looking forward to see this marvelous piece in person!
Cheers my friend!

Fantastic work Colin (y)

I'm trying to learn how to sculpt busts at the minute and examples like this are truly inspirational, many thanks for sharing :)

Thanks Pedro, Zeno and Billy.

Billy, let me know if you have questions as you learn. I may not have the answer, but I will have an answer. As I am self-taught, I have made a lot of mistakes since my first attempt several years ago. Hopefully still lots of time to get better in the future too. :)

Thanks for that you guys. I have to say that I am preferring sculpting to painting in general but both are fun at the right time.

No problem, all doable.

I appreciate that Colin, do you mind if I PM you if I get stuck?

We had a short exchange a few months ago about sculpting media and your advice and information was much appreciated then :)

Thanks Kevin and all. Next up .... ....... I am not rushing into painting him as that is always my downfall....I need to discipline myself go go slow and oils should assist. I have also come to the conclusion that I like the "oil portrait" effect I can get on these large busts. Colin

I like your thinking as much as the figure Colin.
To have him finished in the style of the painting that inspired the sculpt woulld be a great approach.

Paul - I was thinking of really diving in and trying a grisaille and glazing technique, at least for his flesh. My main reservation is what medium to use for the glaze as I don't want a boot polish gloss finish. I have been watching some portraiture videos on you tube and I don't see why the method wouldn't work on a big bust like this. Will force me to slow my painting too. I am hoping that "fat over lean" isn't as big a deal in an inflexible sculpted surface.

Wow Amazing work Colin. The detail in the badges etc is mind blowing.Think you should seriously produce for commercial production. In my view the sculpting you do is superbly done.Im very impressed and my efforts arent worth showing yet.Still doing minor work with epoxy like magic sculp.Im not that keen on the workng times of sculp etc.
Great job. Richard

Thanks a lot Richard. Got to start somewhere so don't by shy about posting. The nice thing about sculpey firm is the stable working consistency for however long you wish to manipulate it. It has many of the oros of magic sculpt and some advantages over it, once you learn how to manipulate it. The only real drawback is that it is durable when cooked...but even that is curable (no oun) to a degree.

Mmmmmmm sounds interesting.
It's going to be interesting to read your of progress Colin, even if it does,kt work they way I hope it does.
I've done real big sculpts up to 1/2 scale, but only in acrylics.
I have oils, I am comfortable with them, but prefer the build up of Acryl glazes over a darker undercoat at the moment.
I will be watching with great interest buddy.
Paul
