Paul - I was thinking of really diving in and trying a grisaille and glazing technique, at least for his flesh My main reservation is what medium to use for the glaze as I don't want a boot polish gloss finish.......

Colin that got me thinking. After decaling and weathering over a high gloss finish, a pal of mine brushes his aircraft with daler rowney matt varnish, and it's a great effect, genuinely matt.

I have been reading about Alkyd flow gel, because of you comments about glazing
It could be worth investigating.
Also, is it possible to mix matt varnish into oil paint in the same way I do with acryl?
I add a speck of tamiya flat clear as I mix and thin my acrylic for a velvet matt.
I also mix in satin varnish fin the same way for leather and for flesh tones.
Anyway here's a link mate, hope it may be of some use to your experiments.

I am thinking I will work on the grisaille coat and research glazes further. There are lots of portraiture videos on you tube that use the dead layer plus glaze method but they don't need to fear a gloss finish. Also relatively few provide colour mixes or specifics on media. I was wondering about glazing with a mix of spirit and WN glazing medium. Undercoat would need to be very dry though.

Thanks for the link. Seems every supplier has their own media. When I paint the dead coat, I will lay down some on canvas so I can practice various glazes without screwing up the model.

Yeah I was thinking you'd have to have a 'sacrificial' surface nearby,
or a few practises on scrap resin to get the technique right first.
All the best

As Brian said, gobsmacked!!!
Probably your highest level of detail to date. Excellent likeness. I'm interested to see how you go at the painting techniques you described.
I do hope you bring it in for the next meeting.

Thanks Colin. That is the plan. Are you planning on driving on 4 wheels so I can pass off those MM's?

Read the first post on our super secret sneaky site that you can only read with a Captain Crunch decoder ring. :)

Just caught up with this one. A very fine job indeed, lots of detail and very crisply sculpted.

Just for interest I am more a painter on canvas and use a fair amount of oil glazing. I have found that Liquin is a very good glazing medium. It does produce a gloss finish however artists matte varnish (I use the Pebeo version in a spray) leaves a superb very matte finish. Glazing over an acrylic base is no problem. Oil colours tend to have varying degrees of translucence so just experiment to find the best colours to use. But then you probably know all this.

Thanks John. I thought of liquin and the later addition of dullcoat or other matte varnish but I was trying to avoid the suppressive effect it can have on the vibrancy of oil. Maybe I was worrying too much about this.

Haven't seen any of your great busts on site lately. Hope to soon :)

Thanks

Colin....sorry for the confusion........I pad is much too sensitive.....What I meant to say was sorry for the negative comment regarding Marty Feldman...I'm much more serious about my(our) work than what I said.It was meant to be a funny. But I believe it's time too get serious with our comments and push all the joking aside.A little joking is fine and fun.But we all have to make this site work for the benefit and enjoyment for us all...........Sorry about that Ipad thing. If it wasn't for my wife I'd be in the back yard using it for target practice........Regards,Wayne
