Masquerade Miniatures Dragon Bust Review

4003 Masquerade Miniatures
THRYMNIRSDRAKK, Scourge of the North
Dragon Bust 185mm
Sculpted by Gregor Adrian
13 parts

The minute I saw this beast over on coolminiornot.com I just had to have one! This piece is from the German based Masquerade Miniatures. They have some real talent over there, and this piece speaks volumes! Cast in sturdy gray resin, this 13 piece kit is details from top to bottom! Every scale, tooth, dimple, tear, divot, crease, spine, wart, whatever, is rendered in crisp detail. There are a couple small casting issues with my kit, I will explain as we look through the pictures. Honestly, if I didn’t have several pieces I already had to work on….this guy would be on the bench!!!! Enjoy.

Above is the box the kit arrived in. Great box art, sturdy DVD type plastic contianer lined with foam. My kit was sealed in several bags and nestled snugly in his box.

The kit is 13 pieces in all. This image below shows the main parts of the dragon with a small plinth attaching piece. The two main pieces of the display plinth are not included in this pic.

The neck is a study in scaly perfection, each one is individually sculpted with care. They stick out just enough for great texture and each has scribed effects for dimention. I have a couple small casting holes in mine, and the neck fril does not dry fit due to the complexity of these parts. It wants to fit, but because of the intersection of so many intricate parts, it will need some clean up before I can coax it down into position. Also pictured below are the two horns that attach to the back of the head. Great curving horns with super texture that add to the mean swept back look of the beast.

Below are some shots of the top part of the head, the lower jaw and the two dry fitted together. My kit has an excellent dry fit of these two parts. You have to note the detail of the upper palette and the wrinkled details added there. Also the mean swept back eyes, the immense amount of texture detail on the skin and the teeth all perfectly sculpted. I also include a shot of the head with the horns in position. The dry fit of the horns needs work as there are some small casting pugs to clean up before they fit perfectly. My casting has two small casting-flaw holes on the top at the horn openings, and there are also two casting holes at the back end of each nostril. Should clean up easily enough with some putty, but with a piece of this immense detail, you have to be vigilant!

Below is a shot of the tongue, and of it nestled in the mouth. Also pictured is the piece that goes on the bottom of the jaw. It actually gets sandwiched by the two ear frills, but that will have to be in the next post!

Below are the ear frills. I'm not sure if that is the correct nomenclature, but what the heck this is fantasy right! These go on either side of the lower jaw and frame the head perfectly. Despite some casting plugs, my dry fit of these was quite good. I really like the curved resin plugs along the spikes on the ends as well. A great way to protect those intricate details.

Last but not least we have the plinth provided in the kit. It is actually three pieces. The large flat base, the cylindrical plinth and the small pyramid shaped piece used as a very clever pin for securing the two together. I have to admit, I have some casting issues with my plinth. The upper cylinder part has a couple large mold lines in it. Luckily they don't seem to interfere with the "Cyrillic" type text at the top, but one is very deep. It doesn't read very well in the pictures, but there is a VERY fine detail of "ribs" down the sides of this piece. That is to say it almost looks as if it has been cast using a spool of very fine wire. My concern then is that in trying to fix this issue, you will have to sand off all that texture in order to get it fixed properly. The lower squat base has some holes and a mold plug, but over all would be easily fixed. I may have to find a way to salvage that great writing sculpted into the top of the plinth some how. It is too cool not to use.

Below are some pics I got from the Masquerade site. It shows the kit together and a nice shot of the kit and box.

This kit would likely be best suited to more advanced modelers, and the price is not in every ones budget. But I must say, worth EVERY penny! In conclusion, how can you go wrong with this piece? Imagine the color possibilities! Red, green, brown, blue, purple, orange, black, heck that could be just one of these! HA! This is a spectacularly detailed piece, and despite some minor casting issues, I highly recommend it!

Great Bust..Looks suspiciously like VERMINTHRAX from the old disney movie 'DRAGONSLAYER'
Being Celtic in ancestry I am a sucker for Dragon-lore...

Whoa, Jay, COOL! Excellent review and what a beautiful piece! Did you order direct from the manufacturer or is it available from someone here? Smaug indeed! THANKS!

Steve,
I got this one directly from the source. I was able to pay with PayPal. It was in Euros, so it stung just a bit considering the state of the US dollar, but worth it all over again! I got mine at an introductory price as well. The price has gone up about 30 E since I bought mine! Still worth it....;)

Brad,
not a cheap kit, but the details are like I've never seen. Glad you liked the review. Save some pennies, I think you would have fun with this one!
