Hello Figureteers!

I think this has been up before but are there any matting agents for Vallejo paints? Or to say that could be used with Vallejo paints? I heard a rumor that Tamiya Flat Base could be used, can anyone confirm this?

Cheers

Tamiya X-21 works absolutely great! I saw Danillo Cartacci using it with his Vallejo paints in a series of YouTube videos so I went to Hobby Town and bought some. I found that it works much better than Vallejo's matt medium. I've also found that it doesn't take much x-21 at all to achieve the perfect matt finish. Hope this helps...

Your best bet is Reaper Miniatures Anti Shine Addative. It comes in a bottle just like the paint does and is easily dispensed. The Tamiya X-21 works great as well, but it is much harder to use being in a screw top bottle.

I always use x21 from Tamiya, since Pepe Gallardo told me. Absolutly flat using a very small amount of flatting agent.

Thanks, Im well aware of that. But it is a common mistake and there are quite a few that has mistakan Flat Base for Matt Varnish leaving the intended object a bit frosty.

Hi Janne. As Showlen said, Tamiya flat base x-21 is perfect to get matte and soft finishes. I´m using it since months and works very well with any kind of acrilics, Vallejo included. You only have to mix it with the color you´re going to apply, only a little drop, not too much, because used in excess leaves a white layer in the color when dry.

I'd like to revive this thread :)
Just started to try Vallejo, after many years as a Humbrol painter. So far I painted a face of a figure that turned out good, and flat. Now I just put the first coats on its
clothes, a dark green, and as I suspected, unfortunately the colour turned out satin. Seems to me that Vallejos colors with more saturation to them are more sensitive. I shook the bottles for a long time, and used thin thin coats, and added some Vallejo matt medium, but still.
Anyway! my question to you with more experience with acrylics: what is the best way to proceed from here, put some flat coat on top after doing all the shadows and highlights, or get Tamiyas flat base, and repaint the dark green base colour with the Tamiya medium in it? I got Vallejos flat varnish, but I tried it before and I wasn't too happy with the result... Apart from the difficulties with the satin finish I must say acrylics are great to work with after some practice.

Greatfull for any suggestion on this

Cheers

Give it a quick spray of dullcoat and carry on. I use it lots of times during a paintjob not only to flatten any gloss but also as a "Save" before attempting something new. If it doesn't turn out right some 50/50 of Isopropyl Alcohol and water cleans off the layer of paint that needs removing and the dullcoat protects the layers below.

I myself just experienced this with Vallejo. Ironically green as well! I notice some colours have different finishes and mixing them with mattes would have unpredictable finishes sometimes matte and sometimes satin with a sheen. I'm planning to try the Reaper Shine be Gone and some Tamiya X-21 and see how that goes.

The other thing I noticed was when layering different shades I'm suspecting that I didn't let them dry between coats. So now I'm hitting the area with a hair dryer and that seems to help.

Thanks for the suggestion! I guess you mean Testors spray can right? In case I would put another layer of paint with Tamiya flat medium in it, can I do it straight on the satin surface or does the surface first need to be totally flat in order of the Tamiya mix to work?

Thanks again

Gordy: Yes this is what I discovered too. for example light colours, with white in them seem to be easier to get flat than for example richer saturated ones like "Black green" that I used now.
