WIP Maurice Corry Brit Sniper Afghanistan

Hello Folks

I've almost completed this 120mm scale british sniper Afghanistan. I've had another bash at doing the new british camo pattern which I am finding a bit of a challenge. I'm thinking of writing to the MOD to have them change it to something a bit more simple, what was wrong with khaki anyway!

This figure is a study in 120mm of a British Infantry Sniper in Afghanistan. This figure has the latest version of the British sniper rifle,Accuracy Internationals L115A3, this weapon chambers a .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge and has been introduced to engage targets at long range, falling between the .308 winchester round and the .50 in effectiveness at range. This weapon has been fitted with the Schmidt & Bender 5-25x56 day scope.This soldier has the latest MK VII helmet and the second pattern Osprey body armour desert and combat trousers which during this transistional period can be seen in either Desert DPM or the newly introduced MTP or multi terrain pattern.
He has privately purchased MEINDL desert boots and wears an olive green T shirt under his armour. His helmet is fitted with an IR identifier and has the mount for the night vision goggles. Base included.Kit is also supplied with alternative suppresor for the rifle which can replace the muzzle brake pictured.

Looking very very very good Gordon, know what you mean, it is awful to paint the Camo, tried doing a different figure in the scheme and gave up in despair.

Thanks Tony. I have tried several different photos from web references but keep seeing different shades and patterns in each picture. I think the best thing to do is get hold of some of the actual clothing. I've just obtained some vallejo panzer aces colours which are very good for camo schemes as they have a multitude of shades available so I will keep at it. Once the sniper is done I have an SAS figure to do in the same pattern.

Have a picture of a bolt of cloth somewhere will look on PC, there is multicam and there is multicam, the British version had some extras added to make it recognisable as a UK scheme, it carries over some distinct patterns from DPM if you look at it.

Nice job on this one, I to am going to give this a crack, luckily for me I have a set of these cams so hopefully I will be able to get my head around how to tackle it in this scale, a challenge indeed.

I may have had the same picture Tony but it only showed a fairly small area of the pattern. A larger photo of the back of a jacket laid flat would be much better as it shows a larger area. For painting the older british european dpm I have an old jacket which is good to get the pattern but again the shades of this differed greatly over the years and also wear & tear/washing also had an effect. I have attached some more pics of the SAS figure I am on with which needs weathered and toned down a bit. I tend to have a few figures on the go at the same time, many of which never get finished.

Love the Multi cam, great job, on a technicality though, this figure is from Task force Black in Iraq, they commonly wore miss matched uniforms being a mixture of Brit and US gear. If you Google it there are plenty of images.
Not taking away from your great work, here is how mine turned out.
What colours did you use, and are these enamel or acrylic.

Top stuff Andrew, the figure looks very realistic. There are so many camo variations available and I suppose these guys are at liberty to wear whatever they like. I use acrylics mainly vallejo. I recently bought some from their Panzer Aces range which I would recommend, it's worth having a look at what they have. I tried oils many years ago but could never get the hang of them so have stuck with acrylics.
Like you I've left off the camera on this figure which is a very nice optional extra but a bit fiddly for my clumbsy hands.

This is much better Tony, it gives a fuller picture of the full pattern without any bits of kit obscuring it. I'll use it on the next one.

Gordon, Camo patterns this type ain't the easiest and you're pullin it off very well. Keep er rollin, I like it. The shadows and highlights always seem to be the clincher, but that can be overcome easily with oils. I use acrlyics for all my camo pattern and base colors, but do the shadows and highlights with oils, they blend eaiser and give more depth for me. Love it so far.

Outstanding work Ski- a beautiful diorama and many thanks for the advice. Although I do all my painting in arylics I acknowledge that oils give a certain jewel like effect to any figures.
