In my opinion the iconic image of the middle ages is the Knight , the tank of his time , surrounded by metal , and proving his valour in not only battle but also in the tournament , wearing the finest he could afford , showing his prowess to the ladies in particular.
This is the subject from that they have released recently
Although meaning to be a just a display of splendour both in materials and men with weapons tempered down , there was often many injuries (some fatal)one of the most famous was of course Henry VIII who in later life blamed his gout on the injury when jousting.
Both man and horse were richly attired with amazing workmanship on the armour ( some helmets being spur fantasy!!and the horse furniture , indeed the horse was often fully armoured as well.
