Review Medieval Champion from Nuts Planet

Hi to everyone,

In my opinion the iconic image of the middle ages is the Knight , the tank of his time , surrounded by metal , and proving his valour in not only battle but also in the tournament , wearing the finest he could afford , showing his prowess to the ladies in particular.

This is the subject from that they have released recently

Although meaning to be a just a display of splendour both in materials and men with weapons tempered down , there was often many injuries (some fatal)one of the most famous was of course Henry VIII who in later life blamed his gout on the injury when jousting.

Both man and horse were richly attired with amazing workmanship on the armour ( some helmets being spur fantasy!!and the horse furniture , indeed the horse was often fully armoured as well.

Onto the resin....

What are we looking at:

As normal with Nuts planet releases shipping was fast with the review model being received in a well packed box on opening up I found the instantly recognised blue tell tale box with the box art on the top and some smaller pictures one of the sides.



The resin was packed between soft yet protective foam so no worry about any damage there , these parts consist of the torso, 2 heads , the helmet visor, the right arm, right hand/gauntlet , the shoulder piece , sword (it is not bent ..the picture seems to make it look like that!!) , 2 smaller pieces ( One which fits to the visor and the larger one to the right shoulder plate just he hind the sword) and a base .

In this part we will look at the torso and the bare head, before we do lets see what we need to do .​

Prep....​

Torso.. the usual well placed plug from under the left arm​

Both heads...Small plug to cut off from under the neck​

Right arm...small plug to cut off from top​

Gauntlet...as right arm plus a tiny former from the sword pommel​

Shoulder piece..plug from the corner​

Visor...plug from the lower edge​

Sword..cut away in 3 places from the former​

The 2 smaller pieces just have a plug to cut away before fitting

Base...Nothing​

Again as with Nuts castings previously reviewed all residue resin has been carefully positioned to make it easier to deal with.​

Lets begin with the Torso , obviously this is the largest of the resin parts and has our knight wearing his full armour , the casting is perfectly smooth everywhere , the cuirass is well shaped with the shoulder parts being some of the best sculpting and casting I have had the pleasure to see. , the moveable sections of the shoulder armour are very well done , great work all over , the rivets are all there with accuracy and not a blemish.​

As for the inlay work on the the decoration its amazing ..nice one Jun-Sik​

on now to the Barehead this is one of 2 heads you can choose to use , fit to the torso is good , this is one really good looking fellow ..one to make the ladies swoon I am sure ( like me eh!!) he has a really clean looking face , all features are well done , good eyes , with hair that only I can dream of ...its curling all over , extremely well worked and very natural in form and shaing .​

On now to the remaining resin

Starting with the Helmeted head , this time we are given 2 choices of head , I would have thought that most will choose this one , the head is completely enclosed in the helmet with only the face front showing , this is well done with all areas being easy to get at to paint , the helmet sides around the face are very sharply done.

The helmet has a beautifully worked comb at the top leading to the back where perhaps a display of feathers would be . Around the base of the helmet we have a rope like design again nicely worked , at the sides we have a small depression to fit the visor in

Now the Visor this can be positioned up or down ...most will will to use it up to display the face and the full glory of the helmet , what can I say about the visor except its brilliant , eye slits are spot on wonderful scalloped designs , the whole thing screams quality , the air vent holes are all there ( some may wish to emphasise these more by carefully drilling out.
Fitting is to the 2 depressions on the helmet side , you might like to consider pinning this to fit to a drilled hole so you can move the visor up or down to display..be careful though!!!

The Arm , this is less the hand , and again we see excellent sculpting , good undercuts and again nice detailing throughout , fit to the gauntlet and to the torso will give you no concerns whatsoever.

The Gauntlet , this is the most detailed IMO with excellent edging work see , with the finger sections be nothing short of jaw dropping , under the armour the hand is covered in a material with good surface folds. In the hand he is gripping the sword handle this again is a really nicely detailed area .

The Shoulder piece, fit is easy into a slight depression in the torso again fine decoration especially in the ropework edging , this armour was to deflect any blows from lance or possibly sword .

The Sword , a lethal looking weapon even in resin!! , nice shape with the cross piece again having some good decoration on it , the knight holds the sword upright ...perhaps he is saluting hsi chosen lady .....I would certainly advise pinning this .


The small post fits to the visor on the middle left as you look at it and the larger of the 2 is the rest for the lance which you can see behind the sword in the black and white picture here

The Base is the normal tall but perfectly formed and suitable for the job, fit to the underside of the torso is very good indeed .

Final thoughts

This is a painters piece , bags of details everywhere , great chance to do the NMM effects or get those metallics going, whichever you choose you will have a stunning display piece which was presented well and finely cast ...another well done to Nuts for this release ,a great addition to their catalogue .

Very nice bust, I think one of my next attempt !!! In my opinion the armour represented is more a rich war armour than a tournament one (sword and the plate on the left shoulder to defend the neck is in a tipical war shape). If it is useful to member of this site i can post some more images about war and tournament armours.

The bare headed version looks very much like it was based on Lancelot in the film Excalibur - good likeness. I assume it is supposed to be from Knights Tale but he's more like the Excalibur character.

Thanks for your review Nap. Your close up photos show the exquisite detail of the sculpting and the very fine work done by the casters to ensure every little detail is perfectly rendered. I can't remember seeing a more elaborately sculpted and detailed bust/ figure ever. I'll have to get this one, and bust out the AK True Metal waxes.
