That is brilliant painting! Like Brian I particularly like it is a bit different in colours, placement of lights and shadows, etc. Very original and utterly impressive.

Just curious, have you had artistic training, or are you self-taught? I seem to note an influence from portrait painting...

Cheers

Lovely piece of work Eric, the painting on the face is beautifully done,I have a copy of this bust I picked up many years ago at Euro when mike good was attending the show, great work

Wow, that's really great experience , Smudger . I’m envious of you . :) I hope some day I could join the party too.

Wow Eric, you echo my thoughts exactly, except I use a different primer and also Reaper paints in addition to the VJ and GW. Great minds think alike. :)

Some people love an airbrush and do fantastic things with it, but I'm an old fashioned brush man myself.

Keep up the good work,
Ken

Hi , Ken

Yes, you are right, work with airbrush is an efficient way . Especially if you need to paint or blend a large area with yellow paint .

I painted this space wolf many years before . In this case , I painted the yellow part of the shoulder armor with brush and airbrush combination .

but most of time , i wouldn't choose the airbrush .

Hi Eric,
What great timing .I have the same Kirin bust and have been really struggling with it.So I'll pinch a couple of ideas of yours if that's ok?
A couple of questions Do you have any in progress photos of thee the steps you used for correcting the eyes? if not could you let me how you did it ? I've ruined a couple of othe busts trying to redo the eyes and the scar below the lower lip did you add that?

Hope this all makes sense.

TIA

Chris

Hi Chris ,

Any comments would be welcome . Sorry I didn't took progress photo when I painted the eyes . but I have one large size picture of when I finished then, I hope that would helpful.

I believe that you could clear see the eyeballs in this picture. and you could see what colors I used in this case also .

first of all , I have to declare , because English is not my mother tongue , maybe I can't use the correct diction , maybe i need you use your ability of imagination to catch me please forgive me of that.

1, how to correcting the eyes.
there have a ' formula ' of how to painting eyes . the first , we need to know, if you observe people in front , the face could be equant as 5 parts in broad , as the pink line of the picture above . so that , in perfect condition , we could know how wide the eyes it is . but , most of time , our sculpturer of the model busts neither from the ancient Greece nor Renaissance , so that you will find the shape of the face may be doesn't accurate .
the green lines show us , the eyelid and the wing of nose should be aligned , the pupil and the corner of the mouth should be aligned .
if you observe the David of Michelangelo , you will find this formula is work.

2, about the battle scar.
simply, the color of scars is more like flew, because there are so many minute vessel in it . if you still could not make sure what color you need , I suggest that you could blend the scar part as other skin of the face , glazing some pink or deep pink paint in the end , you could repeat step many times until you feel satisfied.

Ok, that's all , I hope I had have understood your questions.

Hi Eric

That's so much better , like the work you did on the face it does make him look younger , love the black uniform and tge reflection in the peak .

Thanks for sharing

Nap

Why not put an entry into FOTM feature as well ?

Hi , Nap,

I'm so glad that you have got me. let this Wittmann looks more younger is what I want to try. after all , He dead in 30 yrs old , for that he won't looks too old

Great to hear you use only brushes.I'm one of the " elegant" oldies you speak of.I use exclusively oils, but your work with the acrylics is superb.
Brian

Haha , greetings from the generation which "not so much elegant" . Actually I believe the miniatures is one kind of tradition , so I'd like have drawn my inspiration from the experience of elder . in fact , I read the book < how to build dioramas > written by Sheoend Paine when I was a teenager , and I follow his guild , try to paint my first figure with oil . in the next few years I painted many 1/35 figures and large scale figures with the oil . that's really a great experience. but unfortunately, my home city is too dusty, even in summer , so that it's very hard to keep clean during the work , and as you know that would be terrible. so I give up to use the traditional color .

This HJ member may be is my last time to use the oil color , in 2008.

Hi Adrian ,
so glad that you could like my work , actually I had have studied in art school. in this case i try to studied and inspired of the portrait painting of Rembrandt , one of my favorite artist.

That is definately a different style of painting and works very well. Your English is very good and thanks for the art lesson, very interesting. I thought that the eyes make him look very tired and and that fits very well with the time period.
Cheers
