Got to think the days of magazines are almost gone , even the total figure ones have trouble now and they are a pretty hefty price also , just about everything you need to look at is on the net be it modelling , trade related and so on ( oh and I can just see that old father Jacks ears prick up ready to drive the thin edge of the wedge in here :) )
I know it is nice to have a bundle of mags to look back at; but what happens is the articles go out of date as technique gets better this happens with DVD's re the hobby which I have a couple , stuff in them is just to old , one relating entirely to horses ; what a wast of cash that was  showed two different horse colours a brown and another brown , what about all those roan's and multiple greys .
I am only back at this hobby 4 years now with a very long break of some 25 years while brining up a family and trying to earn enough to retire at the age of 70
Some well known modeller friends on this site gave me a whole bunch of mags maybe 3 of 4 years worth , the further back I went the less readable they became as the hobby had moved technically so fast , thats why they probably gave them away in the first place.
Another point is someone can do an SBS here on PF and go into real depth from start to finish; whereas it would need to be edited for a mag .

So like the high street I fear the magazine trade is doomed .

Malc what have you to do with the mag in question : forgive my ignorance here :

Ron

Agreed! I always will rue the day that 'Razzle', went under. :(

However, what you are saying is fair and balanced.

Tech and 'Comm's ', does move on. .. Either keep up or lag behind. My fathers book shelf'(s) is bending by the weight of paper, going back to 1958?? Why?

Mark.

Mark how else would you bend a well made shelf from the good old days of 1958.

If it was Ikea et all, the chipboard and melamine would now be in a recycling centre.

I assume you are proud of 'your dad's' collection :D

I'll back you up with the death nell of the magazines, I've also got about 32GB of Osprey books as pdf files on my pc, so I can even transfer what I need onto my android phone or tablet for viewing as reference as need be. Some books can be great keepsakes but I have a couple of MMM from the late seventies which are borderline ***** now. Maybe you could get Murdock and Co as 1/16th scale figures into the mag now, anyone fancy painting Donalds hair??

No thanks! two, too many issues. 'Murdoch', has to many skin folds to paint. Donald's hair is an compete anomaly, that cannot be represented in it's true form. As it is an organism in itself (Ever Moving).

Mark.

Don't you think they'd make great fantasy figures Mark?? Slapping a coat of green on Donalds skin would be liberating!

Hmm, mixing green with his natural skin tone you will end with this. A lime green 'Potato-Head'.

Do not go there.

I agree with Ron, the magazine reduced the amount per page it was prepared to offer for contributions, hardly an incentive. What can the magazine offer that can't be found on PF and other forums or YouTube demos from Cartacci and others? I think perhaps we are in danger of thinking back to days gone which are never going to be repeated.
I have great admiration for Adrian Hopwood who with support from Malc, Dave Maddox, Steve Kirtley, and others (forgive me for not listing them all) kept Military Modelling interesting through the 90's and noughties without them the magazine would have died for figure modelers years ago.
I find that PF and other forums provide more than MM ever did so we should rejoice in the internet which has given us an abundance of goodies.

MMM, Have never gone on the attack! .. They always seem to be like an 'Establishment'. Always lets those who wish! come to us.? seems to be there doctrine. (Wrong).

Did they view other forums? and actually think, hey lets diverse from our AVF & Aviation, bias.. to ask and include other forms of modelling. .. (We know the answer)

If they could have been fair and balanced in all scopes of modelling., and went into the internet and caught up with current trends., then fair enough, but sadly not.

Mark.

Only borderline?! :ROFLMAO:

I actually quite enjoy occasionally leafing through a back issue from the '70s and '80s (I still have half a dozen or so) if for no other reason than my own stuff now knocks into a cocked hat the stuff that was - back in those days - considered cutting-edge and winning medals at shows. So in that respect they're a great morale-booster! (y)

Incredible how the hobby has moved on in terms of both the quality of models and painting skills.

I think most of the above posts pretty much sum up our feelings about Military Modelling Magazine. Suffice it to say that I was once an avid collector of this magazine but like most as the figures got less and less and the armour appeared more and more often my interest rapidly waned. Then came the period of ripping out the few pages of figures to put in a specially prepared binder (which I still have), before finally stopping the magazine completely. For a few short months I dejectedly leafed through the pages in the hallowed halls of WH Smiths hoping to find a figure or two, but after suffering relentless disappointment I have finally broken the habit and now don't even bother looking anymore. Instead I happily get my figure fix by viewing this excellent website where I know I will never be let down.

Stopped buying it years ago same tired articles/reviews from certain individuals and the long running article about the British regiments upto WW1 bored me to tears so much so the article got skipped past.

A change I would instigate would be the inclusion of two features each month in the pages.
First to bring back the feature once known as stan catchpole's tips. Anyone can send in mini sbs or how to snips, how to portray a running tap, puddles etc.
Second a readers photo page of finshed models like we do here.

It would then allow for the involvement of the readership and encourage the feeling of ownership of the content.

yep....

In 1/40DD scale that would raise the circulation figures chippy.....

But you couldn't reach the top shelf to buy one!

Paul.

"But you couldn't reach the top shelf to buy one!" Paul with my back problem I can't bend down to pick up the modelling mags either so I have to browse the middle shelves . My Knitting is coming along on a storm (look on the V Bench for knitted Napoleonic Figures ) and tomorrow I'm cooking for the 5000.
But some of my relatives thought your comment was smallish so watch out for the smallish committee
