I’m working on this alongside the MMM’s Officer of 17th Lancers bust. It is a bust of an officer of Skinners Horse, the 1st (Duke of York’s Own) Bengal Cavalry from the heyday of the Raj. Not exactly sure of the scale but think it’s 200mm. The uniforms and history of the regiments of the Indian army from this period really interest me and there are several colourful uniforms to go at. Skinners Horse is no exception with the yellow kurta with black and red trim.

Cannonball if I may be so boled, and say " try turning you phone 90° ", that is if you use one to take pictures.

Hi Malc, I do use the phone for the pictures. I seem to recollect trying this once before following the same advice but when I did the photo came out upside down. Don’t know whether I over rotated or if there is a specific way to rotate ie left or right but I’ll give it a go again.

Great painting job on the face. Would you please tell us what colors you used.
Thanks,
Joel
Hi Joel, thanks for the comments, really appreciated. As for the colours, I use Winsor & Newton artist oils over predominantly enamel under coats. The oil mix I use for the flesh is a mix of Cadmium yellow and Cadmium red mixed with Titanium white and a touch of French Ultramarine blue. I tend to add quite a bit of white to the orange base mix. For shades I use a mix of Brown Madder Alizarin and Purple Madder Alizarin and add a touch of Ivory black to this for deep shade. I use a touch of Alizarin crimson on the cheeks/nose for the warm red effect and highlights are varying degrees of Titanium white. I add a touch of Cadmium red to the original base mix for lips and black to the base mix for the five o’clock shadow. Hope this helps.

Hi Mr Cannonball

Cracking choice of a subject , I got mine out yesterday so will be following this very closely

I echo all the comments about the fleshtones ...lovely work

My next bust will be Hawks Skinners in mess dress

Hi Nap, many thanks. These busts are getting a bit catching, I’ll have to watch myself. As far as references go I’ve got the Osprey book on Bengal Cavalry but it doesn’t show much in colour of this particular period of the regiments uniform. I’ve done a bit of research on google and screenshot some pictures from there. I noticed this book appeared in the google searches but I don’t have a copy. If you’ve any good colour pics particularly for the head dress colouring/striping I’d be really interested. I’ve seen some versions that show pale blue bands, red pin striping and others that seem to be the mustard yellow or gold and black bands only.
