hi all
well i am not as great as many of you sculpters here, i admire all of you ... i am starting my own works and i am having a partucular problem about how to make mouths , any advice how to build it well?
thanks in advance

Hi Gabriel,
I will attempt to describe how I model the mouth

Having got a reasonable look to other areas eyes nose cheeks
in other words the upper part of the face

From the chin area I push the putty up to form the upper lip,
checking both profiles. I then, when moderately happy add putty
to the chin area again pushing up to form the lower lip from then on
in it is a matter of playing with the putty and what I consider to be
most important checking the profiles.

There are some very talented sculptors on this site who hopefully
can make sense out of what I have posted as in sculpting terms
I consider myself pretty much a beginner.

Hoping some of this helps

Frank

hi Frank
thanks for the helping
mouth in my opinion shows a lot expressions hope all the other great sculptors here can talk about this topic too

Gabriel , that is a good question you asked there. Now , IMHO , you cannot really say how you are going to sculpt a mouth unless you decide beforehand what the face's expression is going to be. You know , every action has a reaction and this goes for the face too. If the face has a smiling expression , it will reflect on the cheeks and so on. So after deciding what looks you are going to give to the face you handle the basic features taking proper care for proportions ( very important ) , and you go from there. I suppose , many , like me would play around with the putty until all looks the way it should. I would like to know what Quang has to say about this. I will definately learn something. Quang take notice pls.!!!

Look at Gordy's vBench on this site. He's a top sculptor and has a few heads that he sculpted for Warriors featured.

Here it goes. I made a roughed in head for the sbs and hopefully the photos will speak for themselves.

I first put in a line where the moth will go. The corners of the mouth line up with the center of the eye sockets and the widest part of the chin.

I further define the lips and their basic shapes.
Note I have not yet added additonal material to the mouth.

Additional material has now been added to the center of the upper lip.

Next I carefully push in the sides of the bottom lip and smooth it in to the side and top part of the chin.

I then take two very small rolled out pieces of sculpey which will make out the bottom lip which is wider on the sides then in the center. these are then blended together.

The final roughed in basic mouth. I will now go in and refine it as I think it's really not that good. The next photo(s) will show it cleaned up, then we'll move onto some basic expressions.

Anders, An article may be good but not with this example. I'm far from pleased with the mouth so I am refining it by making it a bit smaller. I will post images of the finished mouth later today, and then move on to a few expressions.

Wong, Thanks.~Gary
