Let's see what Pavel comes up with. I suspect It may well be something that encourages participation by creating an environment where the less vocal members feel more willing to contribute and that has to be good.
As for censorship I'm pretty confident it won't come to that if people act responsibly.
Most discussions that end up attracting controversial comments are usually only pulled when they get uneccesarily personal. Even in the days before moderation the administrators tried hard to not to intervene and only did so when we had all got ourselves into a feeding frenzy.
As you can probably tell I'm warming a bit towards an agreed operating framework and code of conduct but certainly not towards a set of rules and regulations.

I have found this thread very interesting to follow and its on its 3 page ,people have put there points of view across some have agreed ,some have apologised some have got the wrong end of the stick some have disagreed ...
that's the beauty of it we have done self moderated however there will always be time where we need a little bit of help I don't mean to judge or blame but just to help .i have spent many years working in all sorts of conflicts and very often a fresh pair of eyes and ears can be a huge help.
There are people who do love to hide behind the badge of secrecy ( was that a film ) and cause problems and for them I send my pity ,for they are missing out on the rich and diverse interaction of 99% of what this site does which is called openness having an opinion , and the last time I checked it was called democracy and we have to put it in our arms and protect it as its a hard fought for right that some people in far off distant lands will never feel its embrace .
I don't think we need more rules we just need to look after each other, we have a common bound we love the hobby
Just my opinion
Cheers Chris

I have to agree with Derek on the fact that a lot of unneccesary comments come from people who have secret identities. When I signed up, as a veteran of blog wars, was surprised to find that there was no tie in to who you really are. Almost all the major comments sections on the web are tied into facebook or other cyber identities. When this happened on the news sites, name calling and flaming went down at least 90%.

I will say this about moderating. 90-95% of what they do is never seen. And yes, they get bombarded with complaints. Most of what they get are never acted upon. It's handled behind the scenes. At times mods can come across heavy handed. Most of the time it's because of things they are privy to. I can assure you the mods, then and now, are acting in the best interest of the community. So at times we may be upset with them but just give it time. It will blow over just like it always does.

I believe the existance of mods on the site is needed. The guidelines are there, we all know them and for the most part they are just common sense. Mods are there to sometimes remind us that the guidelines are there.
I've only been here for a couple of years, but I've found that 99.99999% of the members here are decent, respectful and mindful people. On the "hobby" forums, the threads contain great exchanges regarding the many aspects of our hobby... save one... the 3D sculpting forum had some instances of heated mudslinging but simply by removing one shitdisturber (who turned every thread into an unpleasant conflict) the 3D forum has become a spot where the exchange of ideas on this new tech can be done in relative peace. The same shitdisturber was known to raise a fuss in the other forums as well.

The "Lounge" is a different story altogether. Put 5 or 10 guys together in a cafe, pub or bar and allow free reign on the subject matter and eventually, someone will disagree with someone else... human nature. Opinions are like arseholes... everyone has one, each one is a little different and nobody really wants to hear from another one's. We are allowed to disagree. With respectful exchange, even if one's opinion can't be changed, a better understanding of of someone else's might be gained. Subjects like politics, religion and sports can stir emotions almost every time. As adults, most here have been adults for a long time, we expect people to respect our opinions... sometimes what is forgotten is the need to respect other people's as well.

If a topic is presented that one finds they can't participate in without getting too twisted up or offended... don't read it, don't join in, don't start a fire... just ignore it and read another thread. Just because you disagree with an opinion or find something offensive, is it really fair to say "I don't like what's being discussed here so no one should be allowed to discuss it"? Just because you don't like a show on TV, doesn't give you the right to take it away from everyone else who might enjoy it.

To bring this rant back on topic.... I don't blame the mods, they are reacting, in most instances, to members complaints. My comment is directed at those that force the mods to take these actions. If you don't like the show that's on, change the channel... don't complain to the network until they take the show off the air and take it away from others. As well, don't dive in on a discussion in such a way that it goes from a discussion to a fight, thereby, forcing the mods to step in when the arguement gets out of hand.

There are alot of people here from around the world and if you take a second, you might get a new perspective from someone. If you'd rather not do that, don't hold the rest of the membership hostage to your ideals. Stick to the hobby specific threads.

Finally, I don't envy the Mods... you guys spend your time and energy doing a thankless job (ask any referee from any sport).

Thanks

Colin (the non-Mod)

Much ado about nothing.I stand by any of my posts, and have no problem with being moderated, but a stop should be put to anonymous postings, as I can't see the reason why anyone would make a comment and not want to be recognised for making it,other than just wanting to stir things up like naughty boys do!!!
I think my whole life has been taken over by the thought police,so for God's sake(I mean any God, too numerous to mention here ,but you know who you are) don't start mucking about with my hobby our I'm out!!!!!!!!

Colin ! ..I have always believed that the true definition of a, 'Wise-Ass', ..is one that 'Breaks wind', in the middle of a heated conversation ! therefore breaking the momentum, and distracting the obdurate's , from progressing their controversial point ! That to my mind that is a, 'Wise-Ass'. ... you have one !:D .. get it insured! :ROFLMAO:

Regards,

Mark

Colin,...... Definitely! :ROFLMAO: (y)

In the UK, its defined as a 'Smart-Arse',... but the principle still stands! .... However, it does not go down to well at dinner parties!

Seeing as we are now onto Smart Arses and breaking wind, should the moderators not ban this as its got nothing to do with painting figures, and internationally we could offend certain people, especially me as I am a Bush Baptist. No I am only joking fellas, don't get onto me. It's good to hear a bit of light hearted banter on planet figure, and like all conversations they all wander away from the track at times, but there is nothing wrong with that even if it does Bore some fellow modellers.

moderation not domination;)

If the moderators look like that and make house calls to punish bad behaviour... well... expect some bad behaviour from this guy ;)

Unfortunately, I know what Colin F looks like and seeing as he is the closest moderator to me... I promise to behave :angelic:

BTW Colin... If you show up at my house for the meeting dressed like that... you might be denied entry... maybe.
